What card should I get first?

Postby unicornsandponiesraweome! » Fri Jan 24, 2014 3:15 pm

I just turned 18 and am going to college this summer after I graduate high school. I've done most of the turn 18 stuff that you can't do when you are younger... I've bought my first lottery ticket. I bought my first pack of cigarettes (never tried it before, but I <3 smoking now!), and I rented a hotel room w/ my bf. The only goal I have left now that I am an adult is getting my first credit card. I've done some research and found a few I like. I like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, the American express Platinum, the Maril accolades, Stratus rewards Visa. Maybe even the Visa Black card, but my sister's boyfriend's sister has it and she says it sux big time.

Anyway, what card should I get? I want them all, but don't want to apply all at once cuz I hear thats bad. I also got something in the mail from First Premier Bank saying I was pre-approved. That sounds like a really premier card. Is it better then the rest of those other cards?

thanks and x0x0x0,

Kimmie

In order to adequately answer, readers here would need to more about you....your credit file (presumably thin due to your age), income, what if any cards you have or are an authorized user on...that sort of thing.

You stated you've done some research...perhaps more research is in order. The cards you mentioned, while very good cards, are not usually a starting point for someone just out of high school and headed to college. They are, for the most part, for consumers with a somewhat significant credit history. In particular, the Merrill Accolades is a "by invitation only" card, you have to have an established relationship with Merrill Lynch for starters.

Set your sights a bit lower, and research cards along the lines of a Discover IT Student card, or various student cards from CITI or Capital One.

Why not go all out, something along the lines of the Chase Palladium, or Amex Centurion? I think those would be ideal starting cards, and while you are likely to get a toy limit, with responsible use, you'll soon grow them into something usable.

Those are two excellent cards for starters... I second Member's endorsements. The First Premier card is an excellent choice as well. If you get all three... well I don't think there is anyone in the world who has a Palladium, a Centurion, AND a First Premier card. You could be the first!

Or maybe go for the Commenity cards, collect them all! 100 dollar limits coming right up. That might get you say one lacy bra at Victoria's Secret. Once you pay that off you can go for the stockings.

Yeah, but OP can't buy lottery tickets, cigarettes, and/or motel rooms to shack up with her boyfriend with store cards...

I'm guessing you bought the condoms while you were still 17...

As to which credit card you should get, I concur that both the Palladium and the Black Amex are excellent starter credit cards. Once your creditworthiness is well established, you should upgrade to Credit One.

Did someone drunk spoof a new profile to make fun of, or are we really torturing a new member this harshly? I can't tell because I was still working a real job at 4:15 EST and didn't achieve drunk until 20 minutes ago...

Yeah the name is a bit too much of a take off on BearsAndTurtlesAreTheBest and the post was kind of out there. I took it to be trolling as well.
