No More 5% Cash Back for Online Shopping - Now What?!

Postby Ikarus » Tue Dec 31, 2013 11:57 pm

I was too busy spending $1K to get $100 back on my AMEX BCE that I missed out on the 5% cashback rewards for online shopping through Chase, CitiDividend, and Discover IT.

Are there any cards, beside US Bank + (grrr!) that have any increased cashback for online shopping?

I'm really looking to better use the Discover IT and CitiDividend.

Happy New Year, everyone. :)

I know it's not a credit card, but have you considered some of the "rewards network" options to get some freebies from online shopping? I use UPromise to help pay down my student loans, so if I log in and shop through them, I get cash back towards my student loan ON TOP OF whatever rewards I get from the card I'm using (I also get cash back for dining at certain restaurants, all I have to do there is use the card I registered with them). Sometimes you can get as high as 10% back. You can also use UPromise to save for kiddos college, should you have any rugrats. There are other options to get rewards like that, might be worth a look. Just this year, off the top of my head, I got $30+ back for buying a computer online and earned about $100 back from dining at restaurants in the network. My total back is just over $200 this year, which is almost one full student loan payment, just for taking one extra step while doing shopping and dining I was going to do anyway.

Edit to say: I think UPromise also has the option to just deposit the funds in a regular, non-education savings account. So you could feasibly double your cash back by signing up, more than double if you're using it for tax-preferenced things like paying student loans or saving for education.
CSP $19K
BOA $4K
UMP $11.5K
Target Visa $1.5K

Funny thing. I forgot all about my Citi Forward card, which nets me 5 points for every dollar spent at Amazon (bookstore) and everywhere I eat. I only used the card to purchase a laptop and for nothing else.

All this time I've been using my Chase Freedom for eating out, I could have been racking up mega points with Citi Forward instead.

Grr.

Yeah, sounds like we're both on the grandfathered 5/3/1 rewards program! I have over 70K TYP on my Forward. I'm hoarding for a rainy day and because their value isn't very high :(
Citi Forward ($10.1K), AmEx Blue Cash Everyday ($30K), Chase Freedom ($12.4K), Discover it ($5.5K), Barclaycard Arrival ($12.5K), L.L. Bean Visa ($5K). FICO 806 (TU), 812 (EQ), 806 (EX).

To finish minimum spending to get sign up bonus, you can google "some ways to finish minimum spending". Or visit million miles secret maybe. :)

Of course I'm talking about next time :)

When I got my Forward, it wasn't clear I was getting 5 points per $1. I read on a few sites that Citi wasn't always honoring the points. So I called a rep and he sent me an official letter explicitly stating that I'm getting 4 bonus points for transactions in the correct categories.

But you're right. The points suck when converted to cashback.

I'm pretty good about reaching my spending limits buying things I normally would buy and not turning it into a shopping spree.

So far, my sign-up bonuses have only required $500 - $1000 in 3 months -- cake.

I'm familiar with million miles. That guy really pushes the boundaries of what lenders would accept as plausible behavior, all for our benefit. :)

Don't overlook the shopping portals available to your cards.
