Confused on how Discover calculates cashback

Postby DGenerateKane » Sun Dec 29, 2013 4:22 pm

I've been trying to figure out what happened with my cashback on my last statement, and can't figure it out. I used my More card for just online purchases for 5% cashback last month. I supposedly got 7.80 in the 5% category and 17 cents on everything else. All the transactions show up as merchandise except for one, services. But when I calculated the percentage of every 5% transaction, I came up with around 9.90. And assuming I'm still getting just .5% on everything else as I haven't met the minimum yet this year, the one transaction listed as services should have got me just under 8 cents. So I'm confused. My transactions are as follows:

49.99 - Merchandise
19.99 - Merchandise
15.98 - Services
55.24 - Merchandise
61.95 - Merchandise
7.99 - Merchandise

So can anyone tell me if my math is wrong, or is it Discover's error?

I guess it depends on how they code the purchases. I think you are going to have to ask them about it.

Several online merchants wont count for online purchases. Check and see if it says "manually keyed" on the charge. It all depends on coding. Email or call them and tell them you bought all your items online and didn't receive credit.

I guess I'll have to call them. I also have to call them to convert my More card to the It card, apparently the secure message system is not an adequate way for whatever reason.

I found it just easier to call. They can give you a full tally and you can inquire about specific charges if need be.

Blue Cash Preferred: groceries & gas

Double Cash: everything else

Got curious so I played around with it in a spreadsheet.
I get $7.80 if I put the 5% on all transactions except for the $55.24 purchase.
That still doesn't work though because if I put the 0.5% on that one, it comes out to 0.2764, which is more than what you got for "everything else". I didn't find a way to make both totals work at the same time with the transactions you listed.
But yeah, calling would be a good idea. I wish they would show the rewards total for each transaction. Luckily I don't put very many transactions on my Discover, if I did I can see it becoming a nuisance to figure out.

I brought a few times from Hermes online and the don't code it as such so yeah, that really got into my claw so to speak

I think the cashback doesn't get factored in until the end of the statement cycle? Like in mine it shows I earned about $50 in cashback "currently" but it's referring to the statement prior

If you're talking about the statement prior, then my bad, I just know I was a bit confused at first too because of that

Tracking the cash back is rather hard. I PC'd my More card to an IT which will take effect in January. Once it does, I am going to see if I can download the transactions each month and find a way to quickly and easily reconcile the purchases to the cashback value I am expecting to see if I get all of it. Reading complaints about not getting all of the CB has piqued my curiosity about this. I do understand it may take a cycle or two to post.
