CSP vs. Platinum

Postby MrMosby » Mon Dec 23, 2013 10:47 pm

So I used to have an American Express Platinum card, which I cancelled because I wasn't traveling much and didn't like the high fee without the benefit. Since then I've pretty much have settled on primarily using my Chase Freedom for the rotating categories, Amex BCP for Gas/Groceries, and my Chase Sapphire Preferred for pretty much everything else.

Now I'm starting to travel a bit more for work and am trying to settle on a frequent hotel/flyer program. I have traditionally flown Delta (my city is a hub) and stay at Hilton hotels Amex, however on my Sapphire card it appears the best shake I get is if I book United/Marriott versus Delta/Hilton on Amex.

Now with that said, the platinum has a few more benefits the CSP card doesn't have such as:
  • Airline incidental credits
  • International companion ticket, which could be a huge benefit, but assuming I fly international for personal travel every three years the international companion ticket is a wash (and I believe there is blackouts).
  • Global Entry
  • Airport Lounges (Normally my layovers are short so I don't get to even really use them)

Is there anything I'm missing that would tip the scale in favor of Amex over my CSP (i.e. worth paying the $355 a year extra)?

Since Chase gives a better shake than Amex, Chase (or Citibank if you want AA lounges) is the way to go.

I just did a little more reading on the companion ticket, it doesn't even seem worth it in most cases. It also seems like Chase is trying to add benefits while Amex is taking them away.

Anyone have thoughts on the insurances (travel, purchase, extended warranty) differences between the two?

We are losing AA/US lounges in March so the Platinum may be less appealing to you. If you continue to fly Delta (like me) you may be okay as it seems for now Sky Club access is staying put. Priority Pass works with some domestic lounges but not many. I only hold on to the Amex Plat for traveling purposes; I usually book my travel with my CSP though...In most all circumstances it makes more sense to book travel with a CSP as the UR points transfer so well.

I've never had occasion to use any of the insurances--but am glad they are there.
Good luck!
