Can you apply/have two of the same credit card?

Postby DM_NYC » Fri Dec 13, 2013 11:09 pm

A week ago, I received a letter in the mail from Capital One saying I was pre-approved for a credit card. So, I applied and was approved.

Today, I received the same pre-approved letter for the exact same credit card. Is this an error on their part? If not and this is common practice, does it make sense to have two of the same exact card?

Any insight here would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know why someone would want two of the same credit card but I'm sure a lender will be willing to give you as many opportunities as they can to borrow from them. This is why we all have shredders.
Cards:
Chase Sapphire Preferred
Marriott Rewards
Citi Hilton
Barclay Arrival
AMEX BCE (member since 95)
Chase Freedom
Discover It
Wells Fargo Platinum
Barclaycard (Apple)
Local Credit Union Visa (buy local!)

Experian: 789 (Aug 2014)
Equifax: 807 (Aug 2014)

I had two chase freedom at once. But I closed one of them, and transferred the closed credit limit to the other one.

There is one great reason to have two of the same card. Double the rewards cap.

Not Used
Citi Simplicity - 5K, Sam's Club Discover - 10K

Future Cards
Sallie Mae World Mastercard

FICOs
Exp 772 - TU 781 - Equ 781

I didn't have any intentions on actually getting the second card. Just thought it was strange that they would send me another notice like that after I already received that same card.

Can I apply for the second card and still get the sign up bonus?

I have two Citi AA cards and two Barclays US Air cards. I never use any of them, but I received bonuses on all of them.

Oh nice. Did you need an invitation for the second one?
