Which would you recommend for me?

Postby AmEx Steve » Tue Dec 10, 2013 5:14 pm

Hello all. I am new to the credit card game and need some advice. I have 3 cards. Bank AmeriCard Cash Rewards, AmEx Green and AmEx True Earnings from Costco.

I Generally keep my Green card away unless I go to nice dinners or use it for travel.
The costco one is normally for a large purchase at costco.
And the BoA is for everyday.

I am thinking that I should have an emergency card thats a visa or master. However I cannot decide what company is best. I looked at the Citi Diamond and Chase Freedom even the Amazon card since they are offering a 50 dollar gift card which I could use for Christmas. Even though I love my Amex I try not to use them all the time do to me being a young guy just starting in the Job world.

What would you guys recommend?

Thanks

Having a Visa is not a bad idea since not every place accepts Amex.

Which specific one just depends on what you want from a card. Don't sign up for a card just to get a 50 dollar gift card - it's better to look at the long term and how you see yourself using the card and pick the one that fits your spending and life best.

If you want cash back, Chase Freedom is great for now because the $200 sign up bonus. I have a citi Diamond and I don't like it very much. It has low credit limit and limited point redemption options.
All my posts are my opinions. All my posts mentioned "you" are merely for discussion-purpose only. No advice is given in any post at any time. It is also impossible for me to put effort to verify every statement that anyone has given.

You really need to tell us what you're specifically looking for if you want recommendations.

If a single company was best then we'd all use that company and none of us would use any of the others. Again, you need to define what is best for you. Company isn't really the important factor. Define your needs/wants and we'll suggest specific cards. Selecting based on company is painting far too broadly.

What he said ! Look at the long term. Where do you see yourself credit-wise in a year? In 5 years? In 10 years? Choose a card that suits your needs for the long term. You can always add more cards if the need arises.
Retired, and in the process of retiring cards!

I've been a lucky guy and I only have few dreams left in life. One is a toothpaste that does everything. I've never understood why you can have a toothpaste that whitens and fights gingivitis and freshens breath and prevents cavities and is sensitive and offers triple protection.

My second dream is similar: One Credit Card that meets all of my needs. I call this dream "One Card to Rule them All"
Cards:
Chase Sapphire Preferred
Marriott Rewards
Citi Hilton
Barclay Arrival
AMEX BCE (member since 95)
Chase Freedom
Discover It
Wells Fargo Platinum
Barclaycard (Apple)
Local Credit Union Visa (buy local!)

Experian: 789 (Aug 2014)
Equifax: 807 (Aug 2014)
