Coin

Postby JRG1392 » Wed Dec 04, 2013 12:14 pm

Has everybody seen the coin? What are your thoughts on it for organizing and using all your different rewards cards? I bought it, but I haven't seen any posts on it so that worried me.

I love the concept really but
- Lots of security issue
- In 2015 the US banks will start moving to chip and pin/signature and slowly discontinue magnetic stripe readers to merchant. Your coin will become unusable but the battery only last 2 years so I guess it doesn't really matter

I also ordered it. Seems really cool. Even if it goes the way of the dinosaur before the battery dies due to chip and pin implementation, I can still use it for all those annoying store discount cards, my frequent flyer and hotel member cards, and etc. I'm lugging around on my keychain/in my wallet. But I wouldn't pay the full $100 price for it just for the rewards/membership/discount cards when you can frequently just give them the member number/use your phone number.

I don't know that it's much of a security risk. If it's away from your phone for a while (what was it, 30 minutes?) it deactivates, so someone would have to be really crafty to max out all your cards within that time frame if stolen. Plus it doesn't show your full card numbers, so they couldn't be written down by stealing it. I suppose that if someone had a stripe reader they could access in under 30 minutes from taking it, they could get your card info off of it, but on the couple of occasions my card has been "found" by some unsavory person (I've twice dropped a card, and both times the WRONG person found it), they've always used the actual card for their thieving.

Good to know. Given my klutziness and tendency to head to the store with just a credit card and my cell phone in my pocket (what can I say, if I'm just walking up to the local grocer or whatnot, I see no need to haul the purse), if I can set it, I'm setting it to, like, 5 minutes. :)

They really have done a pretty good job of taking the concerns that people had and changing the Coin to address them. Thats why they added a strip you can sign and also has your name printed on it. They also added a feature where if your Coin is locked then you can enter a morse code like password to unlock it when it may have been locked since your phone died.

If they had come along a few years back, maybe. But given the switch to EMV chips in less than 2 years it is just an expensive gimmick from a company that will be out of business soon. My concern would be finding that the charge, made now not when delivered, will lock in when they decide to engrave a bunch of these just to keep the money. Also, their warranty will be hard to use if they are not around.

I just can't see them still in business in 2015.
