Hard Pulls

Postby darkguy2 » Tue Nov 19, 2013 8:33 am

I checked my credit report yesterday and saw that I had two entries listed under "seen by all" that are from my credit union that has a line of credit for me. The line of credit is for student loans. So if it is listed under "seen by all" does this make it a hard pull? I do not know why they would have two hard pulls on me. I have had this line of credit for over a year.
Discover IT - $5,700
Chase Freedom - $5,700
Costco Citi - $13,000
Sallie Mae - $4,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $6,000
Chase Sapphire Reserve - $19,500
Citi Double Cash - $6,500
Amex BCE - $13,000

FICOs: Discover (777), SallieMae (764), Amex (767), Citi (772)
FAKOs: CK- TU (760), EQ (760)

That is correct.

Ask them. Have they been reassigned or consolidated?

I will give them a call when I get out of work today. Will they do a hard pull if I use my line of credit? I thought they had to get your permission to do a hard pull.

Credit Karma only monitors TU, one of the three major bureaus, that other hard pull may be on EX or less likely EQ. But you won't find that using Credit Karma.

You gave them permission to do so when you got the account. Account review pulls aren't supposed to be coded as hard, so it's possible someone screwed up.

I understand that when I first got it I gave them permission to do a hard pull but I thought they had to get permission every time they do one. I know they can do soft pulls without my consent. I am hoping it was a mistake. I tried to call them but they said I would have to call back during normal business hours which is until 5:30, which is when I get home if I am lucky from work. I guess I may have to call them from work tomorrow.

"hard pull" and "soft pull" is something that's made up by the credit bureaus. It has no legal basis. If they have a permissible purpose to pull your file, they have a permissible purpose to pull your file. How that gets reported is a matter of how that inquiry is coded. Account review -- the periodic pulls that creditors do, to make sure your risk profile is still what they want -- is supposed to be coded as a soft pull, since it's not the consumer seeking new credit. But it's not unheard of the use of a dormant line of credit to spark a hard pull. Nor is it unheard of for the request to get coded wrong (There is, literally, a field on the request sent to the credit bureau that codes the purpose of the request), or for credit bureau to screw up.

What's the date of this pull? It's common for credit unions to do a credit pull when you join, and another when they lend to you. So that might be it. Or it might be something else.

It is for student loans so I make regular requests twice a year or so. It has not been dormant. I know the first one was when I joined but I do not see anything that would explain the second one.
