Asking for CLI on my cards?

Postby rbai76 » Mon Nov 18, 2013 2:19 pm

I currently have

Chase Freedom $3000
Discover It $1500
Citi Dividend Platinum $1000
GE Amazon Store Card $2200
Khols Store Card $1000
BestBuy Store Card $800

I pay every card off in full at the end of the month and my overall utilization rate is 9%

Average Account age 6 months
Oldest account is the Citi Dividend for 11 months
TransUnion Credit score 686

Should I try to get a CLI with my Chase, Discover, and Citi cards?

Discover allows you to ask for a CLI after 3 months. Chase allows you to ask at any time for a HP usually, but it would be wise to have at least 6 months with their card if you are going to take a hard pull.

Citi I do not know their policy as I've never had a Citi card maybe someone else can help you with that.

I have had some bad experience with Citi. A couple of months back, after having Citi card for 2 years, I asked for a CLI. The person on the phone told me that it would be a soft inquiry and if hard inquiry is required she would inform me first. She never informed me and triggered a hard inquiry on my CR.
After that I had to call the Maryland office, talk with some sort of manager, have my phone conversation pulled.
In short, I disputed the hard inquiry, and it took little more than a month to get the case solved, and Citi agreed to remove the hard inquiry from my report.
As for CLI, I got the CLI for $800. My Citi now is $2000 from $1200 (Citi is on the bottom last list to give me low limits) .

Are you willing to accept hard pulls for each? How old are each of those accounts?

Under your circumstances, if it were me, I'd go CITI first (your oldest), then Chase, then Discover. CITI has been very generous to me in the past and I think that, of the 3 with your situation, they would be the most generous for you. Chase can be as well. Discover seems to be more conservative with their CLI and particularly with fairly new accounts. But Discover is more likely to give out auto-CLI without asking. I've had 2 from Discover since opening an account, but none automatically from Chase or CITI. With CITI, though, use the automated process; they will frequently counter with an offer, if you don't get exactly what you requested.

As with anything creditwise, YMMV!
