Rearranging

Postby djrez4 » Fri Nov 08, 2013 5:30 pm

Today, I applied for some cards.

I applied for the Barclaycard Arrival card. I'll use it for non-bonus spend where Amex isn't not accepted. Otherwise, I'll pull out the SPG card for non-bonus spend.

I applied for the Blue for Business Amex. I don't plan on spending much on it (even though it gets a 30% point dividend at the end of the year), but it comes with 10,000 MR points and has no annual fee. That means I can keep it open indefinitely and keep a MR account open even if I'm cancelling/churning Amex charge cards. I capped out my eligibility for Amex revolvers (called lending cards in Amex language), so I had to cancel my HHonors Amex. No loss there. AXON awards are pretty useless these days.

I applied for the Chase Ink Classic. I don't want to pay the fee on the Bold and already got the lounge access for 2014, but I want the bonus categories. Chase wouldn't let me change the Bold to a Classic, so I had to apply. I get 20,000 UR points and no annual fee, so again, a keeper for bonus categories like cell phone, cable, internet, and office supplies. Ink earns me about 1500 points a month without even messing around with manufactured spend.

So, what does that leave -

Freedom for quarterly bonus categories;
CSP for restaurants and travel;
Ink for cell phone, internet/cable, gas;
SPG for non-bonused, Amex accepting vendors; and
Arrival for non-bonused, Amex rejecting vendors.

The Business Gold will get upgraded to Business Platinum sometime in January and the personal MB Platinum will get the ax. I considered downgrading it to the PRG, but I don't spend enough on groceries (Costco doesn't code as groceries), gas, and airfare to make the annual fee worthwhile. Plus, if I ax the MB Platinum, I can be eligible for those snazzy 100k offers that come out once a year. The upside is a possible doubling of my current MR balance. The downside - no personal charge card, which gets a rousing "meh" out of me.

There we go. Another quarter of fun.

Somehow I don't see a gold spade in your future.

Just kidding you know. Sounds like you have a good plan.

Considering I regard djrez4 as ostensibly one of the smartest, most level-headed members on these boards, I'd have to say that if I were a noob just starting out in the card-churning/travel-hacking game, I'd take his card selections (and reasoning for them) deeper to heart than most.

My only questions are:

1) Seeing as you're a Costco shopper (me too!), why not get the Amex Costco Business?
2) When has Amex offered 100K MR points for platinum? Do I feel jipped, now...
AMEX: PRG Gold, Business Simply Cash, Business Costco, BCE.
Chase: United MileagePlus Club, Sapphire Preferred, Amazon Rewards
Barclaycard Arrival World Mastercard
HSBC Cash or Fly World Mastercard
USAA World Mastercard, USAA Platinum Mastercard
Wells Fargo Business Platinum
USC Credit Union Mastercard

Sounds solid, but yeah I agree with Z06Biker, why not the Costco AmEx?

My new strategy is: Gas and groceries, BCP. Pretty well worth it, gets me $50-$60 back per month. Dining, some travel, large purchases, and anywhere that doesn't accept AmEx gets the CSP. SPG for everything else that's non-bonus spend. I probably should use my Discover Card a little because I want to keep it, but I haven't used it in a while. Also, I will use my Platinum Card for large purchases sometimes so it won't crowd a reported limit. I signed up for the SPG back in August and I just hit my 5K spend since then to get the 30K Starpoints bonus. I've been leaning toward starpoints and UR points for a while now, they're just more valuable to me than MR points.
Amex Platinum
Amex BCP 21K
Amex SPG 5K
Barclaycard Arrival Plus WEMC 5K
Chase Sapphire Preferred 23.5K
Credit Union 10K
Discover IT 7.75K

I have a personal Costco Amex. The business version would not get me anywhere my current cards don't already.

(How did I get that sort of reputation?)

Let me know when the 100K MR offer comes out. I'm on it!

Grats on your list of cards. Did you put the same business info on the Classic card or a new business? This is what I'm planning to do later next year if they don't offer me a retention bonus offer. Might just apply for the other Ink Bold just for the bonus
