Constantly Closing Cards?

Postby Midori » Thu Oct 24, 2013 9:05 pm

For those of you who like to apply for new cards on a frequent basis, get the sign-up bonus, use the rewards, and then close the card before the annual fee/next annual fee hits, do you ever find that the trail of short-lived cards has any effect on your ability to get new cards for new bonuses?

By applying for a specialty card (a la an airline card, a hotel card, etc), using it, and canceling it, does it ever keep you from returning for new bonuses in the future? Or does your previous relationship disqualify you from being perceived as a new customer, and therefore you're ineligible for sign-up bonuses?

I know it depends on your personal priorities, but I'd love to hear examples of what's a keeper card (ie, the Sapphire or a particular Amex, despite the AF) vs what's disposable.

Any advice in general?

Speaking from experience, I would say every creditor is different. It seems in general as long as you don't abuse the hell out of it you're ok. I've only really had experience in this regard with Amex and they didn't care.

Flyertalk seems to have more bonus chasers and you might have better results asking there. Haven't experienced this myself as I don't churn cards (all my cards are keepers until they no longer benefit me) but I've seen threads where people have been denied sign on bonuses from both Chase and AmEx but I can't recall specific details as far as timeframes, number of times churned, etc.
