Arrival vs Sallie Mae UPromise

Postby Ikarus » Wed Oct 02, 2013 3:47 pm

Just approved for AMEX BCE and looking for 1-2 more cards this go-round.

I want a Visa Signature Card w/ EMV chip, but may have to wait.

What is the difference btwn Visa Signature and World MC?

What is the typical approval criteria for Visa Signature and World MC?

For now, I want at one travel rewards card to round the bunch.

I'm liking the new Barclaycard Arrival (no AF version):

and

Sallie Mae's UPromise, which seems to have many built-in, compounded rewards:

What do you guys think? (I don't see any or much info on the site for either card....)

I just read elsewhere that Barclay's can be quick to close your card if you pick up too many other cards.

True? I'd hate to get a larger overall line of credit only to have it shrink.

Unless you know you're going to spend a lot on those specific Online Stores or Restaurants I would stick with the Arrival. The Arrival rewards looks a lot more solid and less prone to changes than this probably always changing specific merchants on the 5% and 4% categories. The up to (attention to the "up to") 3% gas category on certain gas stations doesn't attract me at all, your BCE most likely get you more on the long run for the gas category than the Sallie Mae.
Just my 2 cents.

Applied and denied for Barclaycard Arrival World Mastercard (no annual fee) and Barclaycard SallieMae World Mastercard (no annual fee) student card, which was a surprise.

Checked the status of both apps 8 hours later using their link and was given the "Unfortunately, we cannot provide you a card..." So, I'll get mail in 7 - 10 days.

I'll call the backdoor number on Monday and see what's going on. I applied for both cards back to back, minutes apart. Read on another board that multiple pulls by Barclaycard only show as one hit on your credit report.

I'll likely just ask for one of the two cards as a reprieve. Not sure which of the two....

At least I scored with AMEX BCE and finally got a card over $5000, which is a step in the right direction. Sometimes, I guess you gotta look at things in baby steps... crawl before you can walk.

Will call Cap One to convert to a Quicksilver and call other cards for soft CLI's heading into the holidays. That should keep me in good stead till next year.

They are very sensitive to new account(s) so it might be a reason they deny you. Recon (almost) always work. Just be prepared.
