Sorry I will add that I do not spend money on groceries I go out alot to resturaunts. I live in NYC and use taxis, so I do not spend money on gas. I do rent cars when I need to go out of town, which is probably 8 times a year. Otherwise I would also use it when I travel airfare/hotel.
Thanks, Kim

Cap One is inquiry sensitive on their "prime" cards like Venture which is kind of ironic in a way in that it's 3 hard pulls to get a Cap One card. Based on the many years of revolving experience they say they want for the Venture you'd probably find the Amex easier to get honestly.

Plus being an Amex member the card will backdate. At this point why not wait until January to app for it (the Delta if you want that), you should be fine for it but the it will backdate and raise your average age of account.

Basically you can answer your own question better than any of us can for you though - just look at what they say they give points/miles/rewards for and compare it to your anticipated use and spending.

Update:

I took your advice Member, but I didn't wait until January. I applied for the Delta Sky Miles card and I was declined :-( However I called and had a manual review done and I was approved. When I was declined I asked what the reason was and they told me the credit report that was reviewed was from September, uhg. I knew that was old information with a low score so I called for reconsideration, and I was successful, only 1000 limit but I am ok with that. I dont need the credit right now, my primary goal is to get more credit and imporve my creditworthiness, by keeping my utilization low and limits high. Now my plan is to request the maximum credit line increase in 60 days and continue to build from there. I want to say I am living proof that advice given on this forum is honest and if followed, helps people like myself.
I asked about hard pull and soft pull and I was told initially it is a soft pull, but once approved they always do a hard pull. I am not concerned about that because I only have one on Experian that is due to fall on in April 2014. I will be ready in May 2014 with higher credit lines, and lower utilization to apply for a premium card. I am being aggerssive with this now because I want to buy a house next year and I feel like I need my scores and credit lines to be "smidge" more robust than a few subpar cards with no chance of growing. I knew I had the best chance with Amex since I have a relationship with them and I am pretty happy it worked out.
Thanks everyone!

what kind of expenses do you have, ballpark?

we already know your balances, and added together it can be a lot, but you also said you have a fixed income of over 100k..I would just pay off the care credit if your mortgage/rent is low and you have no other responsibilities (i'm giving $$ to my mom) besides living expenses, bills, and rent/mortgage as mentioned.

If you have a good enough amount socked away, you can try for a prime card with Chase, and ask to see if you can do a special consideration.. or you can try Bofa and do a 'secured' card while you're getting the stuff knocked off your credit report, and upgrade it once it does.

edit--NVM, just realized I was reading off of page one

Hey there,
Thanks for your comments whit.
My expenses are fairly low for NYC about 2500/mo= rent/phone/cable/electric, but I have been putting 1300/month into my 403b since January. I needed to catch up, I wasn't doing a great job of that these last few years. The rest of my expenses are purly selfish I live in NY I go out to eat alot and then there is entertainment :-) But, you bring up a good point I will consider changing my 403b deduction so I can pay off the care credit sooner rather than later. I will look into doing that next week. I hope to be where I want to be at the end of December. My AAoA is what's concerning for me. Oldest acct is 4/2011, everything else is on point all baddies removed, I had 3 on TRU, 2 on EX and 1 on EQ all disputed and removed.

At the moment Chase Sapphire Preferred looks enticing so does Citi Thank you Premier. My additional expenses revolve around dining out, entertainment and traveling.

Congrats on your approval! Since you barely squeaked in, you will want to keep your reports VERY clean since you don't know when they are going to soft you. So keep that util down and no more inquiries in the meantime if you want the best possible odds. Don't mean to go all 09Lexie on you but if you want the best chances and I am sure you do, that's what you should do now. Keep the util very low at all times from here out for a while you never know when they will take a peek though it's at least once a month typically if not twice.

Hi member, thank you on the congrats. It is without question that I plan to keep my utilization low. This advice proved to be the most valuable. I will continue to update my progress and read all the boards. I really have learned a lot from this site. Too bad I didn't have this info 20yrs ago.

Hello Everyone, I am in need of some advice again.... Last update I was approved for the AMEX sky miles card. Till now I have not requested my 3x credit line increase. So far all is well and my score are stable at 700-752 since September or November. Today I received 2 card invitations for Chase Freedom and Citi Diamond Preferred Master Card. This is the second time I have recieved the Citi offer. I am not sure what to do. Should I go for it on one or both, now or wait? As always I am happy to here your thoughts.

Here is a hopefully helpful hint for you. If you are applying for Citi make sure you have a balance reporting on a credit card. They will decline you if you do not have a balance reporting. I know this for a fact, having been declined by them for this very reason.
Also apply for them first as they are the more inquiry sensitive of the two, and Chase is easier to recon with (by far).
I would say go for it if they are of use to you and you want them. Good luck and please keep us posted if you do go for one or both. If you are declined for Freedom, call up and recon with them. I'll post the number here if you need that just ask.
