Which Card to Use for Engagement Ring?

Postby Robrus1 » Tue Sep 24, 2013 6:32 pm

I'm going to buy an engagement ring in the next week or two. It will be the largest purchase I've ever made on a card. I can't decide which card I should put it on. I'm kind of leaning toward my Platinum so that I can let it report higher than it ever has so that it will show my charge card "limit" as higher than it is now. I'd also like to put it on either SPG or Chase, that'd give me a lot of Starpoints or UR points pretty quickly, but my CL on SPG is much too low, although maybe AmEx would make an exception and green light the purchase. Anyone have any suggestions about what would be best? Too bad there's no 2X category on jewelry stores. That'd be nice. What would you use, given my current cards?
Amex Platinum
Amex BCP 21K
Amex SPG 5K
Barclaycard Arrival Plus WEMC 5K
Chase Sapphire Preferred 23.5K
Credit Union 10K
Discover IT 7.75K

Did you see there is a 24m 0% BT/Intro offer from Barclays on Credit Karma? It looks like it is based off of their excellent credit offer but with a 24m intro period vs the standard 12, and no $50 signup bonus. I posted a link to it below, you can also google the offer, but it appears they are the only site I have found with it (not even the Barclays site).

Thanks. I should've clarified that I was thinking in terms of value of different rewards points programs vs helping my charge card ceiling for utilization in the future. I plan to PIF, I've been saving a while.

I think my post got edited to take out the two links I posted. They were not affiliate links, just links to an offer details page. Am I only allowed to post links if CreditCardForum gets paid for them, or what are the rules for that?

And Yes, Congratulations!

I would buy gift cards to pay a portion of it and then put the rest on a UR earning card or my Discover Escape so i can use it to defray the cost of a honeymoon.

congrats! its a great feeling watching the expression on their face when you open that box ;) .

that being said, everyone here will probably talk it down cause of it being a store card, high interest rate, etc. but i suggest the zales/citi card. 18mos 0apr as long as you pay off the balance by the respective due date and youre golden. i have had NO issues with them and the statement keeps track or when you have to pay it off and the deferred interest, if you decide to go past the date (it should also be a motivator to get that bad boy paid off in time lol).
