Wells Fargo College Student Card Doesn't Graduate/Convert?

Postby creditcards4life » Sat Sep 14, 2013 11:46 pm

Hi Everyone,

I've had a wells fargo student credit card for 5+ years. I graduated last year and since then have opened 2 new cards. I checked in with Wells Fargo to see if I might be able to just turn this card into a normal rewards card (since I've never missed a payment and the limit is now over 5k) and they said I would have to re-apply for a normal preferred card.

If I decide to cancel the college card since it has terrible rewards, how will this affect my credit? Seems like the card is a dead end once students graduate.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I would decide what type of card you are interested in and apply for it. Either pay the WF card off or it it is at zero balance let it just sit as long as there is no annual fee. Once you have other cards going and a good AAoA you can close the WF. Just my two cents.

Does your student card have an annual fee?
Does Wells Fargo have a fabulous rewards card that you really, really want?
If there's no annual fee, I'd keep it just for the age, and shop around for a good rewards card without tying myself to a particular bank's card offerings, shift my spending to the new card, and use the student card just enough to keep it active. It's okay to outgrow a card. :o)

If it is the student card listed on the website, I would just keep it open because it has no annual fee and sock drawer the card. Use it to pay your cell phone bill every month (and think of it as free phone insurance). That's the one "benefit" of WF cc's- others may have phone insurance when you pay with your card, but it's not as good as WF's.
