New 2013 Wells Fargo Platinum Credit Card Rewards Program

Postby Obi-dan » Tue Aug 27, 2013 10:12 pm

Not that this is earth-shaking news here but I have a Wells Platinum. I keep it because it is my first credit card. I received literature in the mail today stating it would soon be changing to a rewards program. What was not clear was if this card was just going away and all clients would be rolled into another card or if rewards would be added.

It seems like Wells is so far behind the game in rewards this is not going to mean much but thought I would share.
Cards:
Chase Sapphire Preferred
Marriott Rewards
Citi Hilton
Barclay Arrival
AMEX BCE (member since 95)
Chase Freedom
Discover It
Wells Fargo Platinum
Barclaycard (Apple)
Local Credit Union Visa (buy local!)

FICO Scores:
TU: 824 (Aug 2014)
Experian: 789 (Aug 2014)
Equifax: 807 (Aug 2014)

Mine has always been 1% cash back. Did your card not have this?

WF could definitely step up their rewards game.

No it did not. I worked there in mid '90s through Y2K and it did not back then either. That was when I got it. Maybe they added the program later and I had to opt in which would have required me reading something they sent me which I am sure I did not. Interesting.

nah, I think they're stepping up the game

soon they are going to roll out Amex Wells Fargo cards

they made a partnership with Amex awhile back

honestly their credit cards sucks, but I'm hoping with Amex they'll be able to step up their game

the CEO has made comments in that effect, they've been killing it in mortgages and deposits, their bankers know how to cross sell well

but their cc always have sucked, I think that's where they're focusing now..although, their mortgage sales have been slipping, so maybe a bit of both, for shareholders sake

This makes sense. Wells and Amex were both started by Henry Wells and William Fargo (they used to make you take a history class when you hired in as a banker). And Whit is right in your assessment, they are well-trained at cross-sell and came through Mortgage Crisis ok, all things considered. And yes, the cc have always sucked. No inovation. No imagination. Just sell it as OD Protection. Chase is just so far ahead I wonder if the boat has sailed. They may need something really revolutionary.

:) it's a nice piece of history but I think it has more to do with Amex wanting to expand its market and while impressive, realizing that partnership with Wells Fargo would be more lucrative then Walmart.. and Wells Fargo needing to up its cc game.

Wells Fargo caters to low and high end clients

personally I would never step in to open an account unless my friend needed one to make the quota..I really don't trust giving my info to them because I'm afraid I might have more accounts then I know what to do with

funny, Mr. stumpf's son works for.....jpmorgan chase :)

I got a similar mailing, on my WF Home Rebate card. I called them up to see what it was all about, the CSR was a bit foggy on the details but from what she was saying, it's a brand new program rolling ALL of the various types of rewards into one card. Travel/Cash Back/Home Rebate/etc, would become available and we the customer could pick and choose how to use the "bonuses". She said I would keep my same number, but was less clear about whether I'd get a brand new card in the mail. Supposed to take effect in September.

As a sidebar, I also asked her if I could PC from my Platinum Visa to the Signature Visa, she said "No, it's a separate application process" with a new hard pull to TU.
Retired, and in the process of retiring cards!
EQ = 846 EX=828 TU = 836 as of 02/2016

While I do admit that they are good in mortgages and I'm gracious that they gave me my first credit card since my little disaster in 2008, they've pretty much lost my interest and don't wish to have their products (maybe a mortgage). There aren't many Wells Fargo in NYC compared to Chase.

There have no real good cards or rewards even though they have supposedly changed their programs. I don't think that they relationship with Amex would change how their people view their bank.
Wells Fargo Platinum 2.100 (5/2011-cld 7/12/14)
AmEx Platinum (6/12)
Barclays Apple (6/12)
AMEX Gold Delta (5/13)
Marriott Rewards (7/14)

My credit score
EQ: unknown
EX: 762
TU: 752

I just got the letter i think Obi-dan was talking about. I guess wells fargo is rolling out a rewards program like the other banks with limited time offers, travel rewards, giftcards...etc. They even mention a way to use your earnings to bid on things that you want.
