Bang for Buck on Points Transfer

Postby Robrus1 » Thu Aug 22, 2013 7:46 am

Here lately now that I have built up a pretty good amount of MR and UR points, I have been looking at transferring some or most out to maximize their value. I was wondering if it's smart to transfer UR points to Southwest Airlines Rapids Rewards, or something else? Is it even worth transferring them at all?

As far as MR points go I was curious to see if I could transfer them to Starpoints, but that doesn't work out as it takes 3 MR points to get 1 Starpoint. As much as I like Amex, I'm starting to feel like MR points just aren't all that great. I can't transfer them to Southwest or American, which are the two airlines I fly the most. I can't really transfer them to Starpoints, so how do I make them worth more than 1% on gift cards or booking travel through Amex?

I am super happy with the way the SPG Amex works. Between that, CSP and BCP, I find myself not using my Platinum much, since I don't see much point in MR points anymore, but obviously for lounges and perks it's worth keeping. I'm just not so sure about MR points now.

Why not wait to transfer your UR points until you know where you'll need them?

I will, but when it's time to use them I don't want to use them and then later find out that had I transferred them here or here I could've gotten the same thing with less points. Anything I transfer to SPG or Southwest Airlines will get used for sure. I did a little research since my original post and was curious to see how far points get me by transferring them to Southwest Airlines from UR. Seeing as we get a 20% discount when redeeming points through Chase, in the past have been reluctant to transfer them out. I wish booking Southwest flights through Chase's UR travel page was possible. Anyway, it appears as though when transferred to Southwest, the points seem to go just as far. I kind of want to mostly focus on SPG at this point though, I think it is so cool that for every 20K points you transfer out, they give you 5K more.

Worth is highly subjective no matter what the topic. We can't tell you if it's worth it to you. We don't know how you value the other options. You don't have to transfer until you need them.

I currently intend to transfer my UR points to UA but they're sitting in my UR account until I need them since they're more versatile that way. It's entirely possible that I may want to book something via the UR portal. Or I may want to use UR point for an Amazon purchase. Or something else...

I mean "worth," quite literally, pure value of redemption. Trying to get better than 1% redemption, specifically, and exploring all ways to do so.

MR points are pretty worthless to me. I'm going to transfer them to Hilton, or just use them for Amazon purchases. Amex is very much overrated, especially when compared to UR points.
