2013 Shell Gas Card: Is It Really Worth Keeping?

Postby Michael » Mon Aug 19, 2013 7:00 am

I have a Shell gasoline card that pays 5 cents a gallon IF you charge 45-100 gallons a month.

This is really not a great reward, and I have AMEX BCP, Chase Freedom, Cap One Quicksilver, Discover IT, etc.

Yet, the Shell has a $2000 limit, and I have had it since 2010. My main gas is Shell.

Should I keep this, for utilization ratio, and use it occasionally, just to have a gas card in the mix?

Thanks.

What are your gas consumption patterns?

If I'm running low, I can expect to put about 23 gallons into my vehicle at a time.

Gas was $3.429 when I filled my truck on the 9th, so that would have been $78.87 for one tank.
Gas was $3.229 when I filled up on the 17th, so that would have been $74.27 if I had filled it completely. (Which I didn't-- I only needed 15.5 gallons.)

I would have spent $153.14 on gas in two weeks to get 46 gallons.
At that point, the system recognizes that I've crossed the 45 gallon barrier and calculates my statement credit. Five cents time 46 gallons is $2.30.

Your BCP does 3% gas; Freedom is currently doing 5% gas this quarter; Quicksilver does 1.5% across the board; Discover is currently doing 5% gas this quarter. So if I spent $153.14 on gas on your cards, that would be $4.59, $7.66, $2.30, and $7.66 in rewards.

I would keep it for the extra $$ and the diversity and the time, and might charge the occasional convenience store purchase to it, but I wouldn't try to put 45-100 gallons of gas on it any month. Maybe when gas gets back below $2/gallon, but not right now.

That'll be the day. I'll be happy with what you're currently paying. 4.20/gal here :(

I have had the Shell gas card since 2008, every year I have asked for a CLI and it is now up to 9,000.
If you have had it this long, I would hold onto it for aaoa and have them bump the limit once a year.
I will never charge anywhere near that in gas,but the limit looks great on the report.

Are you talking about the Shell GAS card or the Shell Mastercard?

I have the Shell GAS card.

I'd keep it and never use it. Why bother? If it's a high credit line for you, definitely keep it.

I just canceled three credit cards I never used because it makes things easier. Both Citi and Chase were more than happy to move my credit lines from the closed cards to other existing accounts. I don't know if you'd have such luck with that card though.
My Limits:
NFCU NavCheck: $15,000/NFCU Platinum: $11,500/NFCU nRewards: $8,000
Chase Freedom: $6,500/Chase Slate: $6,000/CSP: $5,000/Marriott Rewards Primier: $5,000/United MileagePlus Explorer: $5,000/Southwest Primier: $3,000
Citi Hilton HHonors: $9,700/Citi Simplicity: $8,200/Citi Forward: $5,500
AMEX Blue Cash Everyday: $8,000/SPG AMEX: $5,000/AMEX Everyday: $5,000/AMEX Delta Skymiles Platinum: $3,400
Discover IT: $7,700
Barclay's NFL Extra Points (Carolina Panthers): $5,000
DCU Platinum: $3,000
RTN FCU CC: $2,000
CCCU Platinum Rewards Visa: $2,000

Current total limit: $129,500

I am talking about the Shell gas card, not the Credit Card. It can only be used for gas and stuff in the store.
Just go to the website and ask them to bump the limit yearly.
It has never been a hard pull.
