Trying to get into the AmEx family...

Postby spy23714 » Wed Jul 24, 2013 4:06 pm

So I've been working on rebuilding my credit the last couple of years and I've really been hoping to get into the AmEx family soon. My credit scores are around 650 averaging the three, so I know at this point, it's a bit of a long shot.

Here's my dilemma. I was just late on a truck payment by two days. I thought the wife had mailed it, she thought that I had mailed it. I know that they will report this as a late payment and my scores will take a hit, so I'm considering applying for the AmEx before this is reflected in my scores. I'm just looking for some advice as to what you guys might do as I'm not too keene on the credit/credit card game just yet.

It should be noted that I applied for and received a Capital One Platinum card just before Christmas last year, before finding this website and realizing that i probably shouldn't have as I'm stuck with the same $750 CL as everyone else. I also financed a necklace for my girlfriend which apparently meant I applied for a Helzberg Diamonds card about two weeks ago. I know that this is two inquires in the last year, one being in the last month, so I'm also wondering how that would affect my outcome with AmEx.

Thanks in advance!

Have you called the truck people to see if they would remove the late payment from your record? Often times, if you've got a good track record, they might forgive a one-time accident.

I have not. I had no idea they'd do such a thing. It's my local, small town bank and I just got the delinquent notice in the mail so I'm sure it hasn't been reported. I'll try and give them a call tomorrow. Thanks!

If you want an entry level Amex, I would suggest Delta Gold, it seems like this is an attainable card with that credit score. Can't hurt to try...Good luck
