My plan, thoughts?

Postby catsartcox » Thu Jun 27, 2013 6:55 pm

So I am trying to phase out my Wells Fargo. The point system is now useless compared to my other options. And as I said in my last post, I am now not fond of my Barclay card. It seems it offers me no rewards and little benefits. But mainly because of how they treated me. I did get the CLI letter today, and it was just because of to many inquires on TU. Witch I swear was just AMEX this month, Discover early last month and theirs. :/

None the less, I am thinking that after I am done with the 3 month 1000$ promotion my AMEX blue, I want to try to get this Citi Thank You Preferred. I do already have a Forward card. I am moving in a few months to a city that has Citi banks. So I want to eventuality move away from wells fargo to Citi. I am not fond of their fees. I did get a invite for this Thank you Preferred card, not sure if that is something special or not.

So after the 3 months-1000$ promotion ends with this Thank You card I would want to wrap it all up with a AMEX Gold, not sure If I should get the fancy Gold one or not. What is the real-world differences? I understand the fancier gold is only really worth while if you travel a lot.

I am trying to shift to more 'prime' non-student cards, that hold higher benefits. I feel they would weight more later on. My Wells Fargo, Forward and Discover are Student cards.

Let me know...I am like 702 average as of a few days ago. Going by the sites calculator it says In three months I should be up around 40-50 points. I think that is a little on the high side....who knows..

Anyways, let me know.

The better Amex Gold Card (PRG) offers a better rewards points structure and you don't necessarily need to travel a lot to take advantage of it. I had it for a year and it was a great card. It's $50 more per year, but 2X points on gas and groceries is nice, and so is the sign up bonus. I would suggest that over the regular Gold Card. I have no experience with Citi, but none of their products really attract me. I too got an offer for the Thank You Preferred Card in the mail this week. Anyway, my suggestion between the two gold cards would be to go with the Premier Rewards Gold Card. Hope this helps a little. If you do travel at all, flights get 3X points on the PRG.

cool, thank you. Question though. Does the rewards for the blue card and the Gold card go in the same pool of points?

Yes, they're both membership rewards points cards, and when the points post to your account they will be combined. I used to have the regular Blue card also, but recently pc'd it to a BCP.

Doesn't the Blue card use Membership Rewards Express points? I guess it negligible, anyway, since all tiers of MR points automatically get upgraded and pool with the highest tier a cardholder has.

Yes. If you get a gold card it will earn membership rewards points same as blue. The premier rewards gold card gives 3X points on travel and 2X points on gas and groceries. The regular gold does not. I had the premier rewards gold card and blue at one time. The points combine. the blue will not give 2X or 3X points on any categories though.

Yeah, watch out for the Citi Bank "INVITATION NOTICES," honestly they are nothing but BS typically. I literally got 6 "INVITATION" notices and upon doing an app, using the invitation number on the letter, I was denied and wasted an INQ for nothing. What made me the most mad was that after the third letter, the application, and the denial, they continued to send me 3 more "INVITATION" letters. I even tried to call and ask to speak with their credit analyst for an explanation and I was told, "We don't have a specific department with people that review the credit apps, it's all reviewed by a computer model criteria." I was not pleased!
