I have a 704 credit score, what's a good card for me?

Postby hockeyplayr » Sun Jun 23, 2013 6:29 pm

Hey everyone, new member here. Basically I was wondering what some of the more experienced would recommend I do. I currently have a capone card (that was my first) with a cl of $500. About 2 months ago I acquired an amex prg. I'm looking to build up my credit and think I could probably use another revolver.

My current TransUnion credit score from credit karma is 704 with a credit history of about 2 and a half years (student loans plus 6 months with that cap1 card).

I work part time since I plan on going back to school after taking a year long break and make about 26k a year doing so.

Anyone have any recommendations for a revolver that may give me a CL that looks nice, preferably a cash rewards that I could use for say gas and groceries then leave my amex for everything else. I have never missed a payment on my amex, cap1, or student loans and plan to pay off in full every month.

Thanks

Credit Karma is not a FICO score so it's only a guess at what your real score is - mine has always been way off from my "real" FICO so don't take that as being your score, it probably isn't (though it could be, there is only one way to find out).

Amex revolvers are harder to get for the most part than their charge cards (like the PRG) but the BCE fits what you are looking for with cash rewards and for gas and groceries. If worse comes to worse use the PRG since that gives higher points on gas and groceries (2x points). So, your PRG would do it though not as cash back like you are looking for.

I am going to pull my fico reports today after work. Basically my credit history is just under 4 years with my average account age ringing in just under 2 and a half with every payment made on time. I like the cash back cards because i feel they would be useful later on in life when I obtain a larger income. However I would be open to any card that may provide a larger credit limit than the $500 that I have come to believe my cap one platinum card (after reading various forums) will forever be stuck at.

well just an update. I pulled the trigger on a BCE figuring if denied no harm done and I'd be able to see my credit score for free. To my surprise I was instantly approved. Tried calling for my credit limit but their computers are down and they recommend calling back later. Now I am thinking about pressing my luck with a chase card, that way I get my foot in the door with them and have something other than amex in my wallet (I can then leave the cap1 card at home and make monthly gum purchases with it). However I am not sure if this would be wise or if I should wait until I find out my credit limit..

Try a Chase Freedom. When I was approved I was only at a 714 FICO with only 5 months of CC history.
AMEX PRG~1/14--backdated to 2012
AMEX BCE~6/13--backdated to 2012
Chase Freedom~5/13
Discover IT ~12/12

Chase Freedom is a good cash back card, and Chase is usually pretty good with starter limits, as long as you have a solid credit history with no huge balances when you apply. Discover it is also a good card for rewards, but the acceptance rate is slightly lower. It's about the same as AmEx in the States, I believe. International acceptance for Discover is only decent in China and Japan.
Scores on the mend...
FICO: 650 (Discover/TU, 6/23/2016)
Cards I Use Citi Double Cash, Chase Amazon, Capital One QuickSilver
Sock Drawer Discover IT, Citi Diamond Preferred, AE Visa, QuickSilver One, Walmart CC, CareCredit, CreditOne (keeping for history for now)
Short Goal Reach 680

I would go for the freedom especially since the next 5% reward category, which starts in july, includes gas.

(03/14) - Sallie Mae WMC
(09/15) - Citi Double Cash WEMC

Well I called amex today and they said an estimated 2k credit limit (oh well can always try to raise it in 61 days). Think I'd get a similar limit with the freedom? With a 2k limit on my amex to even get any cash back ($25 minimum) I'd have to spend about 1k on groceries which would bring my utilization way up. Does chase have a minimum as well? I do not have a chase checking account

my BCE started with a 2k limit. after 61 days i requested 6k and they countered with 4.1k and i accepted. Today, exactly 6 months after my 61 days, I requested 6k and finally got it. So dont worry, that limit will grow with you.

And I am not sure what you mean by having to spend 1k on the BCE. The cash back accumulates from statement to statement.

chase started me with a slightly higher limit, but I havent seen it grow yet.

Minimum cash back redemption for chase is 2,000 points or $20

Okay see I read it wrong on their site then. I thought you had to break the $25 barrier per statement with the amex. Makes alot more sense now.
