What CC do you carry in your wallet & what stays in the sock drawer?

For just about anything you want to get off your chest about credit cards.

What CC do you carry in your wallet & what stays in the sock drawer?

Postby pac4toon » Sun Jun 09, 2013 1:53 pm

Just curious on what you guys carry daily. I carry an AmEx, a Visa & a M/C in my wallet just because some stores only accept AmEx (like Costco), and some just M/C (like Sam's club). The rest of my cards sit at home. Oh do any of you rotate your cards just so you use the ones that are in the drawer?- I dunno if I should be doing that.
In my wallet:
AmEx PRG/ BoH Hawaiian Airlines WEMC / Chase Freedom /

In my sock drawer:
AmEx HHonors & BCE

I carry my Amex Platinum, CSP (Visa version), and when my new BCP gets here I'll carry it too. Some quarters I carry my Discover if there's a good 5% category that I'll use, but it, my credit union card, and my Cap One card all stay at home. I plan on using the BCP for gas and groceries, I use the CSP for dining and some travel, and Platinum for most travel/misc stuff. I have one monthly automatic payment hit my credit union card, but I have never used my Cap One card, I just keep it open for utilization.
Amex Platinum
Amex BCP 21K
Amex SPG 5K
Barclaycard Arrival Plus WEMC 5K
Chase Sapphire Preferred 23.5K
Credit Union 10K
Discover IT 7.75K

I carry my AMEX BCP (Costco and everywhere else that I can use it), Chase Freedom MC (everywhere that doesn't take AMEX PLUS quarterly promotions), plus my BP Visa (BP gas only). I know that BP Visa sucks, but they just started something called BP Holiday double rewards days where the usual rebate (about 2.1%) doubles (I guess to 4.2%) on Memorial day, Labor Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Xmas. It at least keeps the card active (it is still a Visa), but I use the Chase Freedom for all other non-AMEX purchases, other than BP gas.

I also have a Discover IT card and a Target red card in the 'sock drawer.' Discover comes out for quarterly promotions and online purchases (restricted to Discover) only. Wife uses Target Red sometimes for the instant 5%. Also, couple of gas cards (Exxon and Shell) that get no use.

Hope this helps.

I carry all of them, though I'm running out of room for any more.

Strongly tempted to thin the herd. The Amex cards and CSP are priority as is FNBO, the FIA card is very nice but doesn't get a lot of use as you might expect it would. I honestly have too many cards, will be looking to thin the herd possibly in the near future.

After I get the Chase Freedom or Citi Forward, I'll sock drawer my NFL Visa, as it has a toy limit and no real benefit other than being a backup card for the venues that don't take Amex or Discover.

08/12 Discover It ($1500)
08/12 American Express Zync (NPSL)

Future cards:
Citi Forward for Students 6/13
American Express Blue Cash Everyday 1/14
Sallie Mae World Mastercard 2014
Chase Freedom 2014
Penfed Platinum Rewards Card 2015

You should be about due for a CLI from Barclays. I would give that a shot before ditching it. If they say no, feel free to take that as they aren't concerned about your business and happily move on. I'd at least give it a try, if it didn't cost an inquiry.
