Applying for a credit card and lifting a security freeze

Postby jwblue » Sun Jun 02, 2013 12:31 pm

I have a security freeze on all my credit reports.

I want to apply for the BBVA Compass card.

I would rather only lift one security freeze since it costs $10.00.

If BBVA uses the credit bureau that I lift the security freeze for, my application will be processed.

Which credit bureau has the best chance of being used?

Your guess is as good as mine. Call and ask them, then take next step.
Why have the freeze?

I put the freeze to prevent fraud.

I did call them. The person said it is random.

However, I think if they attempt one time, they will use the same credit bureau with future pulls of the credit report.

I would apply first. They will be unable to complete the application because of the freeze, but they will probably send a letter requesting which bureau they attempted to pull, and asking you to temporarily lift the freeze to allow them to pull it and process your application. That way you know which bureau they want to pull. If you don't want them to pull that particular CB, then just don't lift it and continue the process. It won't affect your credit until they actually have the go ahead to hard pull.

This happened to me once with Chase, and I had to lift my TU freeze for them to go ahead with my app. But they did request via letter which specific bureau they wanted me to unfreeze so they could pull it. I did and voila, approval.

I just applied for the Chase Hyatt card and have a security freeze on all reports. Their email said they would let me know of decision within the next 30 days. Hopefully they'll let me know which credit bureau they want me to temporarily lift the security freeze for. It would suck if they just plain outright reject me because I have a freeze in place...

Don't rely on odds. If they can't confirm then have them run it and then you can lift the freeze on the relevant CRA.

The easiest thing to do is to just lift the freeze on all of your reports for a few days to a week. Where I'm at I think it's $3/bureau but even at $10, it's pretty low and it's not like you're having to pay it each month. It's a one-time deal for applying for a credit card.

Maybe even apply for more than one while the freeze is temporarily lifted.

Update: General CSR said my application was pending 2 days after i applied. I asked to talk to a specialist and he connected me to the Lending dept where the guy told me to lift my experian report. You actually dont have to lift it but can give them a one-time PIN that you get from experian ($0). Called special number back, gave the PIN and they approved me. Still waiting for my card though since it's co-branded and it takes them a while to populate the membership number. Gonna try calling back later today and see if the number was populated and if they can rush the card to me.
