What should I get for gas?

Postby s.jessica » Fri May 24, 2013 7:06 pm

I'm not sure how to ask this question, but years ago my parents somehow got me a gas card with a local station (small town) and I can only use it at that station. It gives a $.05 per gallon discount, but I learned it's never reported on my credit and doesn't appear on my credit reports. When I asked at the office, they said it was an extension of my parent's account but it was in my name. What???? My bill comes in my name and is separate from theirs, so I always assumed it was my own account. It's been open for at least 10+ years maybe more, my dad got me my own card when I got my first job and when they thought I should be paying all my own bills, they put my card in my own name and it's stayed that way.

What I need to know is, would it be more important to have a card reporting on my credit or stay with what I have for the $.05 / gallon discount? I've given some serious consideration to Capital One's Newcomer card because it doesn't have an AF and if I get stuck with a low credit limit, no biggie. I did think about the Barclay card for average credit, but I'm just not real comfortable I could get it.

I don't really want to go the secured card route as I already have one and can't wait to get my money back, any ideas?

I would consider trying for the Barclay card for average credit, you might be able to get them on a recon. There is just no gas station card I would recommend these days, some of the small stations don't even report on your credit, it's just for the convenience of getting 24 hour gas. Most stations have now upgraded to accepting most major cards for their pay at the pump. A Visa/MC/Discover/Amex lets you buy gas at any station, you're not locked into one place and even with boring rewards a major card is better for your credit than that station card that doesn't report or worse, reports on your parent's credit.
