NFCU Visa Platinum Card: Limit as expected, APR too high

Postby rockyrock » Wed May 15, 2013 3:58 am

I was just approved for a Navy Federal Credit Union Visa Platinum card, $25k at 12.99%. The limit was about what I expected but I was hoping the APR would come in a little lower. The spectrum is 7.99% - 18% so that puts me in the middle.

The only way I can reconcile this in my head  is that the limit was based more on my income and the APR was impacted by my score. My goal with this card was to get a low APR card in case I ever needed to carry a balance. In a year I can request to have the APR lowered.

That’s two new cards for me in a one month period so I’m out of the game for a while. I jumped the gun—should have applied for them the same day, or this one first as the lower APR was important. I don’t care about the APR on my CSP.

I wouldn't be that disappointed. Getting a credit card with interest under 11% is still pretty hard to do and generally that's not given to most new customers anyway. You'll have to garden a bit to get considered for lower. 12.99% is perfectly reasonable in terms of people who have good credit. Of all the cards I carry, I have three statistical outliers (Chase Freedom, Discover, US Bank Cash +). All the other non-travel cards are ranging from 9.99% to 13.99%
Cards:
American Express Platinum (NPSL)
Penfed Platinum Reward Visa ($28K)
Chase Freedom Visa ($25K)
Fidelity American Express ($20K)
American Express Blue Cash Preferred ($20K)
Bank of America Cash Rewards MasterCard ($20K)
Citi Thank You Preferred Visa ($9.5K)
Chase Sapphire Preferred ($7.5K)
US Bank Cash + Visa Signature ($7K)
Discover IT ($4K)

You should be happy for now and call a few months down the line and ask for a APR reduction. Navy Fed has always been good to me.

Member since 1997, and they are my primary checking acct but my savings, loans, investing is all elsewhere. I'm okay for now. I know I'll get the reduction in 12 mos.

They have been good to me too over the years.
