Is the Murphy Gas card application a bad idea?

Postby porto » Wed May 01, 2013 1:25 pm

My wife and I usually fill up at Murphy gas stations (part of Walmart). I hate cards that you can only use at one place but recently they came out with a Visa version you can use everywhere.

If I get it, the Murphy Visa card will give me-
4 cents off at any Murphy USA or Murphy Express location*
4 percent cash back is pretty generous. I didn't see anything about there being a limit to how much you can earn either.

Everything else is a flat 1 percent which I guess is average for a credit card.

What do you think, should I try an application for the Murphy gas card? We have pretty good credit. The only thing I can think of is if it's a bad one to be seen on my credit report.

If you want 4% cashback, look into the Amex Business True Earnings (Costco) card. 4% cashback on all stand-alone gas stations (and 2% cashback on travel/dining). The Penfed Platinum Rewards Visa gives 5 points per $1 on gas, though I can't speak from experience how much each "point" is worth.
AMEX: PRG Gold, Business Simply Cash, Business Costco, BCE.
Chase: United MileagePlus Club, Sapphire Preferred, Amazon Rewards
Barclaycard Arrival World Mastercard
HSBC Cash or Fly World Mastercard
USAA World Mastercard, USAA Platinum Mastercard
Wells Fargo Business Platinum
USC Credit Union Mastercard

Thanks for the replies guys. You're right, I guess I misread it. That's surprising that the Murphy gas card offers only 4 cents per gallon. That is only about 1 percent extra, no thank you.

4 Cents/gallon..what a waste..This is my opinion.

I personally use Penfed Visa.
5 x points on each dollar..and I value each point as a cent.

Now..A gallon of Gas $3.50 (national avg)...

For Murphy ..You end up paying 4c less..which is $3.45/gallon.

With Penfed..I end up getting $3.50 * 5 points = 17 points..which is like 17 c..
I would technically end up paying $3.33

If it was costco Business..its 4%...
