CO product change

Postby Luxe » Mon Apr 29, 2013 12:57 am

I have a Capital One MC with an annual fee that I don't want to pay anymore. I'd be open to closing the account except it helps my AAoA so I'd rather PC to one of their free cards. Should I just call them up a month before my renewal date comes around? Also when I ask for a PC what are the restrictions? For example is it possible to go from MC to Visa, because I'd really like the VentureOne Rewards card.

A product change is next to impossible with this credit card. I would cancel the card and apply for a better card without an annual fee.

Why is that? Is it just this particular CC, or is CapOne generally just that strict when it comes to product changes?

I wouldn't go back to Capital One if I was going to lose my AAoA anyway. I suppose I just need to ask them, but historical advice is appreciated.

Z06Biker: Cap One is very strict about product changes and there are many posts on this site as well as other about this subject.

I dont think Capital One does any product change. I have a capital one platinum plus card I got in 2010, trying to do a PC for quite some time now.. I call them every 3/4 months to see if I am eligible for a cash reward card, but they always deny the PC.
Luckily I do not have to pay the annual fee. So the card is sitting in a shelf with zero balance on it.

For several years I have had a Cap One Plat MC mostly sitting in the sock drawer. It started off at 1K, after a year there was an auto CLI to 3.5K. A year latter I called and ask for another CLI only to be told it was not allowed on this product. He even told me there are never any auto CLI on this card, he was unable to explain how my CL is 3.5K.

This morning I received a letter from Cap One offering to upgrade my card to VentureOne Rewards MC. I called and talked to a knowledgeable American located in Washington State. She told me I would keep the same account number, get 1.25 miles per dollar spent, no AF but was not eligible for the 10,000 miles for the first $1,000 spent for new accounts. My CL would remain 3.5K, she admitted she had no idea when and if it would be increased.

So with Cap One there are no CLI nor PC but I have gotten both. It must just be my good looks.

@Rockymet where you talking to a regular person at the 800 number or was it the back door number? I'd think if you talk to the 800 number, they tell you the basic "no" and read off a computer screen of answers when a customer asks a certain question and don't go any further. But if you talk to an actual back door number and possibly speak to an analyst who looks more in depth into your accounts, maybe you could get somewhere.

That no CLI/PC is BS though. I was told you could product change my cards my Platinum MC and I've received an increase on it as well. I didn't do the actual PC though. I'll check in a year or so, but if not most likely I'll just be moving on to another card anyway. I should be eligible for better prime cards by then.

I am in the same situation as you. I call them every 4 months but PC denied, luckily no AF, so the card is on a shelf with zero balance.

If I'm following the discussion correctly---what's mostly being talked about is either a CLI or going from a non-rewards/low tier card to a rewards card...?The consensus is basically you're SOL with Cap1 with regards to those...what about ridding you of your annual fee? Will they shoot that request down too?
