Taking to Europe, is it enough?

Postby lexrj » Tue Mar 12, 2013 3:06 pm

I'm going to the UK and France in May and I'm planing to take my CSP as the primary card and the CrapOne MC (no FTF) as backup. I would take my BCP too but I figured since it's not chip and pin and I pay FTF it's purposeless. Am I good since none of them are chip and pin?
I read that chip and sign is useless and chip and pin is only necessary for automated kiosks.
Any suggestions as far as taking debit cards for eventual cash withdrawals?

First, regular swipe still works widely in Europe. I was in Switzerland last December and passed through airports in France and the Netherlands. My Amex cards (personal and business, both without EMV back then) were accepted just fine.

That being said, EMV is the wave of the future and you will much more likely encounter EMV capable point-of-sale machines than you would in the US. As you said, they are especially common with kiosks. Chip and sign doesn't work for kiosks but it works pretty much everywhere else EMV is used (stores, restaurants, etc).

And your major bank debit card should work too, just expect foreign transfer fees. You may want to keep some Euros and Pounds around just in case.

I went to Paris for my honeymoon in November 2011 and didnt have a problem with a non chip and pin card. I used my USAA debit card and found a ATM machine that would take it near my hotel and used that to carry cash and then used the card for places that took it.
