They can "try" to do anything they please, and some of the bottom feeders do. When I had delinquent accounts, I had multiple vulture companies trying to collect on a debt that I paid in part and got a 1099 with the IRS on the rest for - paid and forgiven but that won't stop the other guys they sold it to from trying to get money out of you too. You could potentially pay the same bill 3 or 4 times with the right combination of bad luck.

Just had to be said. There truly are some collectors who see the law as a mere inconvenience to be ignored as much as possible. They have numbers to make, and how they make them is of little concern only that they make them. It's kind of a truism that all is fair in love, war, and bill collection in the US!
