Great Resource

Postby gmc » Fri Feb 22, 2013 8:46 pm

Now that my posts don't take days to show up :) I just wanted to let everyone know what a great resource this website is. I'm sure it's been said many times before, but based on advice on this site (obviously this goes back further then when I actually signed up for the forum), I have:

*Applied for and received a Penfed Cash rewards card-----I did not experience any of the difficulties sometimes described on this site with regards to how hard it is to get this card. While I would rather allow rewards to build up, the automatic statement credits work fine as well (reminds me of my old Peferctcard); At the time I applied, they encouraged me to sign up for the PenFed Platinum Rewards card, but I generally don't like gift cards.

*Applied for and received a Barclay's Priceline and SallieMae card----I'm somewhat surprised that these cards don't receive more hype; The Priceline card is somewhat gimmicky (as has been expressed before) but I think it works well for non-category spending. I assume that the SallieMae card isn't pushed much because of the lower monthly caps, but for me, they work out fine.

*Applied for and received a Citi Forward Card-----Despite my general dislike for gift cards, I decided to make an exception with this card because Amazon was one of the options and the sign up bonus

*Applied for and received a US Bank Cash+ card---As disappointing as the changes were, I still plan on using this card as my cell phone and hotels card; it may also become a dining card for me eventually.

*Converted my old American Express Blue card (had since 2000) and Discover card (had since 1999-----originally the old silver Discover Platinum card) to the American Express BCE and Discover It cards----I originally converted the BCE to take advantage of the 3% on groceries; once I got the SallieMae card, it became a back-up in the event I go over the $250 cap. I had actually taken my Discover card out of my wallet....I have since put it back in to take advantage of the 5% categories.

*Obtained a Savvy Caddy Wallet----A lot more convenient than my old wallet

I used to think I was pretty smart for using my Freedom card for everything and my Sapphire card for dining purchases and combining them.....Thanks to everyone for all their insight.

Now that my posts show up immediately, I'm planning to post a lot more on this site.

I like those cards too. Did you apply for them at the same time?

No...I got the Priceline first (had never even heard of the SallieMae card at the time); I applied for the SallieMae card some time later and called the next day. I had an old Directv card with Barclays that I never used....the rep was very nice and said he would take most of the credit line from the Directv card and create the SallieMae card for me (still approved as a new card so I got the sign up bonus)

I may move the rest over of the line over the SallieMae and shut down the Directv card eventually; I can't imagine a situation where I would use it

Can you describe how you like that product? With the new cards, I'm faced with a bulging wallet and I haven't found a good wallet solution yet.

Yeah I was running out of wallet space as well. I thinned the herd a bit and it's ok for now but you eventually do run out of slots. Anyone have a good solution to that?

Sure....I carry my wallet in my front pocket; I used to take it out and set it on the table at a restaurant, on my desk at work, etc...

I debated for a while if I wanted to try one of these thin wallets and because the Savvy Caddy website states you can return it if you don't like it, I decided to give it a go.

The wallet is bigger than a typical one, but it still fits in my pocket with no issues; I carry it with me all the time now and don't take it out when I'm sitting down; Most of the time, I don't even notice it.

I also don't have to take time searching for other types of cards (non credit cards) I only occasionally use (for certain restaurants, grocery stores, etc I would have to think "OK which credit card is that behind?") They are in the front now and once you have placement memorized, it's a lot easier.

A couple things about the Savvy Caddy:

*It's initially a little difficult to get the cards out at the start (nothing major), but this goes away quickly.

*The security flaps probably seem like a good idea on paper, but they don't add any real value.

All in all, I actually wish I would have bought it sooner :)
