Planning to get my first card, need help!

Postby eLJardins » Wed Feb 13, 2013 4:32 pm

Hello! I am planning on getting my first credit card. I am trying to decide between the REI Visa card or another rewards card.

When you apply for the rei card they consider you for a visa signature card with no pre set limit and if you don't get approved then you get considered for the platinum card which has a limit but not as many perks.

I have read that having a no pre set limit card is tricky and not advised but there is no way to apply for the rei platinum card. Regardless of whatever card I get I will get an extra 5% back on purchases on top of the 10% I already get for being a member. They are also kicking in a $100 gift card. So...

Should I apply for the rei or try to get another rewards card for "beginners"?

REI Visa Card - Receive an REI Gift Card upon approval and first purchase!

Thanks in advance for the help/advice!

First of all, there's a reported limit on Visa Signature cards, some may not actually be a real limit, but you won't be getting a Visa Signature Card for your first credit card, so don't worry about that right now. Wherever you read that a NPSL card is not advised and tricky is incorrect if they're implying it will hurt your credit or something. I would not apply for this card at this time. I think to be safe you should try to get a secured card with your bank/credit union or somewhere like BofA. What do your credit scores look like? I'd get a secured card and pay on time for at least 6 months before applying for this card.
