FIA took double payment

Postby MemberSince99 » Tue Feb 05, 2013 6:45 am

I ordered my FICOs last month for a cost of 39.90. Made a payment to FIA for the amount on 1/31. Today I log into my checking account and I see FIA is taking TWO payments, one on the date I authorized and another on the 4th of this month.

Lovely. I guess when the bailouts run out, just raid your customer's accounts and hope they don't notice.

Now I'm going to have to call them, and my bank to dispute this as unauthorized which it is. Don't know if I can actually get my own money back (heaven forbid the socialist bankers can't steal whatever they wish from us) and then when things are said and done, I'm DONE with BofA. I am not doing business with an outfit I obviously can't trust. I have NEVER had double payments happen before with ANY lender, and imagine if it was for 3900 instead of 39 dollars. I can't have buffoons or crooks having access to my account, period, so they have got to go.

It's inexcusable, and intolerable, and the end of the road for BofA and I. From now on they'll have to rip me off through TARP funds.

As someone who works in IT, the double charge could have easily happened on the vendor side (FIA) than the bank side (BofA). I'd go through the dispute process and let it take it's course. At least you are paying attention that you discovered it.

Yes, definitely an IT failure, not a deliberate theft attempt, and Im sure they'll refund one or both of the payments. Still, its not like they have an incentive to test and carefully build reliability into their payment processing systems when the worst case scenario for them is the customer notices and complains and they have to refund one of the payments and the best case scenario is the customer never notices and they double their money.

You know, if you really think about it guys, which we shouldn't for our own good, but if we really consider this, it's kind of scary with all these companies having our bank account info. My bank flat out told me that anyone who has that info is free to do whatever they please with it in terms of debits, from a technical standpoint. (Legal is another matter but good luck with that). If the "bad guys" get your account info, all they can truly do is close that account, open a new one, and hope it doesn't happen again to prevent them from taking your money.

And with all of these companies sending your financial info overseas, to me that's even more scary. It's bad enough for Americans to have all my financial information in my view - to be making that info available to foreigners is even scarier. I used to shudder a bit when I'd call Cap One or Amex and some foreigner would be interrogating me on my social security number etc because if they should sell that information I'm screwed and it's not likely anything will happen to them for it (it's not even all that likely anything would happen here in the US).

The whole system is really rigged against us, just the honest truth. Say the worst case happens and some foreign CSR takes your info and uses it to rob you. You are screwed and you get the pleasure of fighting your bank to get your money back. I understand the bank isn't happy because you gave your account info to these people, but if you can't write checks or make e-payments, the checking account becomes basically useless anyway. And if you get black marks on your credit, good luck trying to get the CRAs to make it right - they couldn't care less, whatever a creditor says is the "word of God" to them, even if there is nothing to back it up and you do have proof of what you say.
This whole system is designed to screw the hell out of us. Surprise, surprise as Gomer Pyle would say.....I guess in a way that's why I don't really care about my score much anymore. I have inaccurate info on it which I disputed and the CRA refused to remove, I even complained to the government about it (FTC) but that's a wash as they are in the pockets of the banksters who are basically their lord and master, so there isn't much you can do about it, so I figure why the hell even care if you can't control it?

Long ramble granted, but I really have gotten to the point I just don't worry much about it anymore. Our financial system is basically an open invitation for people to screw us I'm just surprised it doesn't happen more often than it does.

Too True, all you need is the name of the account holder, the routing number, and the bank account number to authorize echecks and bill pays online from a bank account. I have explicit permission from my parents to use their bank accounts to pay my school tuition and on campus housing/meal plan electronically, but its scary that with those 3 things, which could be read off any paper check (including my own) you can authorize a payment from the account in the 5 figures electronically and have it clear without any verification. One of the reasons I check my own bank accounts daily, so if there is any unauthorized debit I can report it.
