Is it possible to cancel application before hard pull?

Postby s.jessica » Mon Jan 07, 2013 7:37 am

I just made a huge mistake. I applied for a customer service job a JCPenny which I thought would be nice for some extra money. When I went to my interview I was told once I passed my background check which would include a credit check, I would have the job.

This morning I applied online for a JCPenny credit card and received the message that I would receive a decision in the mail in 7 to 10 days, which in my experience = a denial.

I have a couple of credit cards, not great but they are major cards that I've never been late on so I thought I would have fairly decent credit. My only phone is a prepaid cell and I haven't had anything turned off so I shouldn't be late on anything. No collection notices or anything. Basically, my credit isn't as good as I thought because I was told everyone gets instant approval on these store cards.

Anyhow, I'm calling as soon as the store opens to withdraw my application rather than wait to be refused a job in disgrace. Now my question, is there a way for me to call in and withdraw my credit application before they do a hard pull? Does anyone have a number I could at least try? In the unlikely event that I get the card but never use it, will it still show up on my credit report?

Calm down please. You're getting way too upset over something that probably won't be a problem.

We don't know your credit. But it's just not true that "everyone" gets approved for store cards.

Now, first of all it depends on the lender whether the 7-10 message means a denial. Some do approve after manual review, where with others it's pretty much as you said 95% of the time a denial.

But even if you are denied it doesn't mean you will lose the job because of your credit. I've been denied simply on the basis of not having a balance on a credit card, no kidding.

So don't jump the gun.

And in any case once you submit that app and they do the hard pull, you really can't "undo" that.

So just sit back and see what happens, no point in making a mountain if all you have is a molehill. If you do have an issue, sure then it's time to see what you can do about fixing your credit, but you don't know that yet. Life has enough real problems without making more that might not be problems at all.

Just my 2 cents I hope it helps!

I agree with MemberSince99. I don't think you'll get denied getting a job because you're under review for the JCPenney card. I feel like a credit check for a job might be something just to make sure you don't have any major baddies like bankruptcy or something. I don't know - but I really don't think they'll not hire you because you don't have enough lines of credit or your utilization is too high (common factors for getting denied).

Also - it might just be that something in your credit report was unclear that needs a manual review. I've gotten the 7-10 days thing twice and ended up getting both cards.

Good luck to you and I hope you get the job and the card!
