Best free credit monitoring service?

Postby jupiter » Sun Jan 06, 2013 6:38 pm

Which free online services do you recommend to monitor your scores online? Or to put things another way, which ones are the most reliable? I know services like Credit Karma aren't as accurate as pulling your yearly free report or paying $15/month for services like freecreditreport.com, but for those of us who don't really have the extra money to spend, which services are the best? Credit Karma? Quizzle? Credit Sesame? Or something else entirely?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

True, the CK score is a FAKO not a FICO it can vary greatly from your FICO score - most recently when I compared mine, there was a 60 point difference. (CK was lower). So, don't put much stock in the score it gives you.

But as far as monitoring your credit, it's fantastic as it will tell you any changes. You can't beat the price either. I agree with agp, haven't used CS yet but use CK almost every day.

Frankly, since you mentioned it, freecreditreport.com isn't all that great, either. I think the best paid site is myfico. Although it only offers Experian and TransUnion (for purchase), if all your cards and loans are reported equally, the scores should all be roughly the same. I know you want "free" but I just thought I would throw that in there.
Cards and Credit lines Acquired:

Escape by Discover (7.75K), Barclay Holland America Visa (7K), Macy's store card (7K), Bloomingdale's store card (2.6K), Citi Custom Credit Line (3.5K), PayPal Smart Connect credit line (2.7K), Chase Freedom Visa (5K), Chase United MileagePlus Visa (5K), Chase Sapphire Preferred Visa (6K), Amazon store card (2.2K), Lord & Taylor store card (550), Nordstrom store card (1500), Gold Delta SkyMiles from American Express (3K), Discover It (6.5K), PayPal Credit Line (1K).

I believe Credit Karma and Credit Sesame offer a good free service. They even have smartphone apps.
