Opinions on which card I should get?

Postby tyleradam » Sat Jan 05, 2013 1:25 pm

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post on the site, so please help me out. Right now I am looking to get a new credit card, right now I currently have the Chase Saphire Preferred, and the Blue Sky from American Express.

I have a coming up trip to Cabo san Lucas, Mexico and I would love to be able to get that flight for free or very little cost. On average the flights are about $600-$700 out of Newark New Jersey.

Last year I managed to get two round trip tickets with taxes for about $250 using the rewards from both the cards. I am hoping to do about the same this year.

Currently I have about 22,000 points on the Saphire card, I spend on average $2,000-$3,000 a month on that car, and then I only have 2,500 points on my American Express. I only spend $200 a month on that card.

With the Chase Saphire Card I believe I get a 7% yearly bonus on points earned and already used. So I would get about 5,000 points, taking my reward balance up to around 27,000.

Now to the question part; is it worth it to sign up for a new credit card? I'm looking at the Citi ThankYou Premier Card, they are willing to give me $333 in a signing up bonus. I'm trying to stay away from Airline Branded credit cards, such as United, Delta, American ect. Since they love to nail people on the flights they can take and such.

Another thought I had was to sign up for one of the Saphire Preferred Partner cards (such as British Airways) sign up for their bonus, use the card then roll over the points once I earn them. I'm not exactly sure if I can do it, and how smoothly that would work out. So if anyone had any suggestions/thoughts about that please let me know.

Thanks!

If I were you I would look at the Capitol1 venture card the Blue Level 2 miles per dollar spent on everything. you get concierge service
just like the sapphire. the Thank you premiere other than the gas and dining what else do you get point wise, I know you get concierge service with this card. like you said no need for airline or hotel cards so I would suggest the venture card not venture1.

Why? That card has an AF, and is simply a 2% cash back card with redemption restricted to travel purchases. The Fidelity Amex or the Priceline Visa (make sure you get the 2% one) are 2% cards with no AF and straight cash back, not restricted to travel purchases.

The downside is that there are FTF, but there are many free Capital One cards that cover that as well.

I say no on Capital One. Here's what I would do, not just for your flight from EWR - SJD, but for any and all flights.

1. Go on Hipmunk and check what airline has flights you want. If you want direct, then look for what airline has direct flights.

2. Get those miles.

In your case, UA, AA, US, and Delta all work. However, it is impossible to redeem via Delta; US requires you to plan way ahead and charges cancellation fees; AA is the airline with worst service. So I would go with UA. However, I must say I am biased towards UA, as I have sworn my loyalty to them. For travelling via UA, the minimum is 17,500 miles each way, 35,000 miles round trip. Since you have 27K points, 8K more should not be hard. Here are some options...

1. I would sign up for Chase Freedom if you haven't already, great card to keep, and gives 10K bonus with small spending req.
2. Sign up for one of the Ink cards that requires no AF.
3. Buy 8000 miles for $301.

Or just book one way with miles, and pay the return.

Main Card: Amex Platinum
For gas: Penfed Platinum Cash Rewards
For travel & dining: Chase Sapphire Preferred

Silver6054 the reason I suggested that card is because the original poster is looking for travel rewards. he/she has a chase sapphire perfered , is looking into the citibank premiere card. I think the Venture card would be better than the cash back card don't you think?
doesn't the Fidelity american express have foreign transaction fee?
I like the capitol1 venture for this poster.

Freedom and CSP is one of the best combos out there. Seeing as how you have the CSP, I would take the Freedom and the 10k points even if you decide to get another card.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k
