What would be your primary card(s) if you were me?

Postby Robrus1 » Thu Jan 03, 2013 10:15 am

What 2 cards would be your primary cards given my situation. I'm curious to see if I honestly have the right cards for me. Annual spend on cards is about 40-45K. I spend about $500 a month on groceries, about $200 a month on gas (for two vehicles), travel about twice a year or so. I spend about $250 a month on beer but my Amex gives me 2X points because of where I buy it. I spend about $200 a month on dining out. I also pay my car insurance, homeowners insurance, and all utility, phone, cable bills etc on the cards. I alternate months. My girlfriend is an au on these two cards and so she puts her purchases for gas and groceries on the Amex and dining on the CSP and then pays me once a month. We don't carry a balance.

My two primary cards are my Amex PRG and my CSP. I use the PRG for airfare, groceries, gas, and beer. I use the CSP for dining out, hotels, rental cars. I like that Amex backdates and I like having a charge card for credit diversity, and no utilization issues, but that annual fee seems steep. I'm just wondering if I'm using the best cards possible for my situation, or if there are any cards I may have overlooked that should be considered. Given my situation and annual spend, what card(s) would you choose?

This would be a great card to have but I looked on their website and you can only apply in a branch location. I'd have to travel to another state over 100 miles away to do this.

About 2 hours ago I went to their website to read about that card. That's what the website said.

I'm not convinced this is a good idea just yet, so I may think about it and wait a few months to let a couple of inquiries fall off. I don't know which card I'd replace if I started using this card.

I suppose if you have a lot it would be wise to wait for them to drop off. You wouldn't be replacing either card with this one, just maximizing your cash back/savings. The idea would be to just use it for the 5% categories that you choose which would most likely be bill pay and then one other. You could still run everything else through your other two, but instead of getting 1-2% rewards (I'm not sure of the rewards structures for PRG and CSP) for the utilities, you would get the full 5%.

At the same time, no one knows the future of the cash+ including how long it will be available and how long the rewards structure will remain the way it is. So waiting could help you avoid getting a useless card or cause you to miss out on the opportunity to get in while you can...So it's really up to you on that one.

Is there reason to think the Cash+ card will be going away?

Robrus1 my opinion if I were you for this quarter I would use your Discover It card because there having the 5% cash back at restaurants.
which capital1 venture card do you have the Blue or the gold? assuming you have the Blue card

why not have your 2 primary cards as the Discover it and the Venture card.

but if you have Venture 1 card the gold version , I would then use your gold American Express it's a very executive looking card, you might get better perks with this card compared to the chase sapphire. do you travel on business alot or you stay at hotels 1 or 2times a year?

as far as gas and grocerys goes theres both the basic blue cash card and the blue cash perfered But I don't think you want 2 cards with annual fees?

For your situation the Chase Sapphire is ok , like do you have the Freedom and a checking account with them? the premiere rewards is a very good card. from time to time I do see alot of people using the gold card. I think your doing verywell.
