Amex Authorized user looking for my own card...

Postby Gatorfans239 » Sat Oct 06, 2012 12:58 am

I am an authorized user on my dad Amex gold account since July-2011, I'm looking too get my own revolving credit card.

Since I've had the gold card, I've never been late, my fako scores are Experian - 696/ Equifax - 664/ TransUnion - 671, my baddies (none with amex) are paid off/settled since 2010, I have student loans that are all current with no lates, I paid off a 32,000 car loans in which all payment were made on time, I make anywhere from 42,000-50k a year, and I have no other credit card.

Should I continue building up good history and hold off on applying or go ahead an apply?

I've tried the discover pre-approve link and they are recommending the discover more card.
Capitol one, aspire visa and HSBC are not options since I screwed up with them, I'm looking for any suggestions on what direction I should head in?

I don't know what kind of cards you are looking for since you are used to using an Amex but I'd try going for the More card as that would be a great start, especially since it showed it for you on their site. Also if you do get approved, in my experience if you want the Freedom card also then let the More generate a statement for you and then apply for the Freedom. In my opinion (just a guess) the two cards compete with each other and whichever one you can get in with, the other is more likely than normal to give you their card as well wanting you to use it instead. Good luck!

I just read the part about the baddies and I know chase is pretty harsh when it comes to negatives on a report so that may not be an option. Discover would be a little easier to get I would imagine and still would be a great start if you can get approved.

I applied for the Discover More card and I got approved last night ;) , I didn't qualify for the 0% apr but they approved me for 3.9% intro with a $1000 CL instead,,,

I think I'm going too hold off on applying for another card and start building good history with Discover,,,

It sounds like you've got a good plan in place and are on your way! Congrats on the approval. So did they give you the student version of the More then or the regular? I always thought the student card was the one they didn't give a 0% intro on

I got the regular card, but because of my credit history that probably why they changed it from 0% apr to 3.9%.
I've seen some post around the board stating Discover will raise the CL every 3 months automatically without having too call in, is their a certain criteria I have too meet for automatic CL increase?
