Perhaps in the future BUT NOT by 2017 as stated.

The card will be here for a big longer than that. For one thing, not everyone has or wants a smartphone

True, I still don't have and do not want a smartphone. I use my phone mainly for voice and rarely for text. Smartphone is too much and too big for me.
In My Wallet:
Citi Forward (12/2010) | Citi TY Preferred (05/2011) | Chase Freedom (11/2011) | GECRB/PayPal (05/2012)
Discover it (07/2012) | AMEX BCP (09/2012) | TD/Target REDCard (10/2012) | Chase Ink Classic (11/2012)
BofA BBR (04/2013) | FNBO/Overstock.com (02/2014) | Barclaycard Arrival (04/2014) | FIA/Fidelity AMEX (04/2014)

I have used LevelUp at a few places. I like the achievement style discounts you can earn but it is cumbersome to get the scan done and really annoying if you have to give your phone to the bartender/server

Good! Otherwise, I want a "centurion smartphone" haha (Could you imagine, a black titanium phone with the Amex logo on the back!)

You can kind of get that now. Look at the Vertu line of phones!!

I have an older Vertu Constellation and let me tell you.... DON'T buy them LOL I did and although it's a really well built and nice phone, it's technology which means it will get outdated. Problem with a $5k phone is when it does get outdated, what the hell do you do with it?

Bottom line... stick with the credit card. It's 'low tech' and doesn't need batteries or a charge cable :)
