Capital One Card Upgrade/Product Change - Any Info?

Postby jumbo » Sat Aug 25, 2012 6:53 pm

I have a Capital One Platinum Mastercard which I got around 2 years ago. I started with 500 CL and so far they have increased my limit to 1750. I was thinking of changing this card with a cash reward card.

So, do you guys have any information or number on product changes/card upgrade for Capital One.
Any info is greatly appreciated.

Hey Jumbo so you have the platinum mastercard and you want to get the green cash rewards card, usually cash back cards are not upgradeable because they a different kind of a card.

if for example you had the blue venture card and when your fee came in, you wanted to lower your level to the gold colored venture, you should be able to do this because they are the same class of credit cards.

Like I don't see anybody going from a Chase Freedom to the Sapphire with the same account, yes you can apply for either card .

is the mastercard a cashback card or a low interest card? or is it 1 of the other travel cards? If it's a cash back card I would call them up and speak to an account mgr. they should be able to take care of this.

if it's a different card you will have to apply for the green cash back card.

MC: the mastercard is nither a cashback or a low interest card...
I called capitalone and talked with an account manager, and she told me that she cannot upgrade to any cash reward card. Basically I'd have to apply for a new one, and that would cost me a hard inquiry.

I got the same story when I called to upgrade my Ice Age CapOne Platinum card. In the end I closed the old card and opened a Venture which ended up opening the door to these reward programs.

Yeah, and a hard inquiry on all 3 bureaus at that. There are many better options for cash back than a Capital One card, so if by any chance it was the green colored card with 1% back on everything and 50% bonus on your card anniversary (making it a 1.5% back card), there are way better cash back cards that would only cost you one pull and have better customer service. Just saying, sometimes it isn't worth it.
