Airline Tier status: Do credit card points count?

Postby sapple89 » Mon Jul 30, 2012 10:15 pm

OneWorld Alliance has three tiers:

Emerald - 30,000 Miles
Sapphire- 50,000 Miles
Ruby- 100,000 Miles

When you convert travel points from a credit card to an airline, does it count towards your airline status?

Ex. Lets say I have 0 Miles with American Airlines, but I have 50,000 credit card points that can be converted to American Airline miles. If I convert my points to miles will it increase my airline tier?

My goal is to transfer Amex points to American Airline points.
second question
Can I transfer Amex points to Asian miles and then Asian miles to American Airline points? (Both airlines are members of One World alliance)

1. Generally, no, credit card points converted into miles do not count towards elite status tiers with airlines with very few exceptions (AMEX Delta Reserve, Citi American Airlines Executive Platinum), and even those have spending limits.

1a. BTW, I thought oneworld Emerald was their highest tier?

2. I am not aware of the option to directly transfer Asia Miles to AAdvantage Miles, though I know you can book AA flights through Cathay Pacific's booking portal. Having said that, if you want to use AMEX Membership Rewards points for American Airlines travel, the best partner to transfer to is British Airways as their Avios system has some great bargains when redeeming w/ AA.
