Should I be applying for a credit card before a mortgage?

Postby lilb999 » Mon Jul 23, 2012 7:02 pm

I recently opened a new Chase Sapphire credit card about 1 month ago and was planning on applying for my first mortgage towards the end of winter/early spring (8-10 months from now). My lowest credit score is 742. I have 2 credit cards for a total credit line of $14000 but only utilize less than 2% of it as I pay every bill off in full.

I travel 2-3 times per month from Detroit to Denver for work through Frontier Airlines and was curious if it would be alright for me to apply for a credit card through them? Doing so will net me alot of miles through the bookings as well as air miles. Basically when I travel to the west coast on a personal dime it will be free since I travel so much for work.

I guess my question is would it be wise for me to apply for this card since I am planning on applying for a mortgage in 8-10 months?

Don't apply for ANYTHING if your applying for a mortgage loan soon, you don't want to give them a reason not to approve you.

Chase Freedom MC 2006 $5000
Amex Sky 1999 $2000

You should be ok with what you have now. The Sapphire will have aged to about a full year by the time you go for that mortgage app. Anything else is cutting it a bit too close. Now, is your Sapphire the regular version or the Preferred version? The reason I ask is because Frontier may be one of the airlines that you could transfer your points to if you have the Sapphire Preferred, so that may be a good substitute to still get some travel rewards. The advantage to redeeming your airline rewards through a bank credit card is that you can pay for your flight with the bank's rewards points but still put in your frequent flyer number and earn miles on a free flight. Hard to beat that setup.

A big NO. If you want the mortgage do NOT apply for anything until that's a done deal.

No.

I'd take more time if it was more of a complicated answer, but it's not.
