How to prevent credit cards from automatically closing?

Postby Dylan1982 » Sat Jul 07, 2012 6:39 pm

I have a couple credit cards (TY Preferred, Diamond Preferred, BestBuy, Discount Tires) that I barely use, I DO NOT want them to close.

My question, do I need to make a couple purchases throughout the year to show activity to keep the card open?
Chase Freedom - $12,500 (2/2013)
GM Card - $7,700 (7/2002)
CitiBank (Thank You Preferred) - $6,400 (6/2012)
CitiBank (Diamond Preferred) - $4,600 (6/2012)
Rogers & Hollands - $3,300 (3/2006)
Target REDcard - $3,000 (11/2014)
BestBuy - $1,600 (9/2003)
Discount Tires - $1,000 (2/2004)
Kohl's - $300 (4/2012)

I know BestBuy closes card down if not used once a year unless your making payments.
That was old HSBC bank not sure about it now since it's owned by CapOne call and asked

Amex Sky 1999 $2000
BCE 1999 $8800
NFL 2013 $1500
Discover IT 2013 $3500
FICO July 16/2012 ---- 742 Experian (Amex)
BK comes off ---- 9/2014

Show some activity on your cards at least ONCE every 12 months.

At least once every 12 months should be okay to keep them "active." Occasionally some cards like the Barclays US Airways card require usage at least every 6 months to stay open and keep your rewards in good standing. I remember reading something to that effect in the terms & conditions.

Use it every once in a while. I wouldn't try once every 12 months, because I know I will forget. Try something like use TY Preferred strictly for coffees if you only get coffee occasionally (like once every month).

Main Card: Amex Platinum
For gas: Penfed Platinum Cash Rewards
For travel & dining: Chase Sapphire Preferred
