Can I convert my BofA student card to another card?

Postby RR1000 » Mon Jul 02, 2012 9:36 am

I have a Bank of America Platinum Plus student credit card with a $900 CL that is expiring in October.

I just applied and was accepted for an AMEX Blue Cash Preferred card with a $2000 CL that I can raise after 60 days.

My question is what should I do about my expiring BOA student card? I'm planning on using my AMEX 99% of the time and immediately paying it off, but I don't want to end my BOA credit because doesn't it look bad on your report if you end lines of credit? Is it possible to "roll it over" into a new BOA card with a higher credit limit?

What do you suggest I do? Thanks!

i recently was in a similar situation with my own platinum plus student card. I decided to get the bank americard cash rewards privileges as to get some actual rewards out of using my BOA card, whenever i actually feel like using it that is.

Its a good option as it gives 3% back on gas, 2% on groceries, and 1% everywhere else. I mainly use it as a gas card when the 5% cash back quaterly isnt in effect for my chase freedom. I would suggest you try and transfer the account into the regular version cash rewards card as it has no annual fee.

Its not the best card out there but it helps keep my AAoA (average age of accounts) higher and also offers 10% bonus cash back when depositing into bank of america checking or savings accounts.

Though you may barely use it, its always good to have a few cards on reserve in case you need to make a few large purchases which could send you over your limit on the amex.

Congrats on your approval for the Blue cash preferred, i hope to get one soon!
