Without worrying about inquiries or credit history, what would you choose and how many would you choose?
I'd personally do 4 cards:
Charge Card: AmEx PR Gold (which I have) - I always like to know I have a charge card in my wallet I can throw 20k on and have AmEx support to boot. I also like being able to authorize users on the account for free and have complete control of them. I also like the ability to get 3x points on aifare, which is extremelly good. One of my favorite things about charge cards is the balance every month does not apply to your revolving credit, so if you're about to sign up for a mortgage you can lean on this more to raise your Credit Score.
Credit: Starwood Preferred Guest Card - I like this more than any Delta cards for the simple fact that it has a lower annual fee, and it has a higher redemption rate than any other card at 20,000 Points for 25,000 Delta Miles. I'd lean on this card for most of my purchases.
Credit: AmEx Blue Cash Preferred (Which I have) - I absoutely love this card. 6x on groceries and 3x on gas and department stores are worth the $75 annual fee every year.
Credit: Chase Sapphire Preferred - I would use this for going out with the 2x on dining out and hotels. It also is important to have something for the places that don't have AmEx, and it also would provide me 0% fee abroad.
Total Annual Fees are : $410 per year BUT! If I tally this correctly, I would have 6% or 2x at groceries, 3% or 2x at gas stations, 3% at Department Stores, 3x on Airfare, 2x at hotels, 2x on Dining, which practically covers everything.
The only thing I would want beyond this is a card with chip and pin, but hopefully the chase sapphire would get it fairly soon. Chase has been implimenting those quite a bit.
