Denied 2 cards... what to do now?

Postby agp » Mon Apr 30, 2012 2:11 pm

I was looking for a gas card for the summer so I applied for Fort Knox Platinum Visa and Penfed Platinum Visa and both denied me. Funny thing is that I got approved for American Express BCE for $8200 just last week. What should I do now? I would still like a gas card, but if it means going through all the trouble of calling, faxing my ID, social, paystubs, and explaining for 2 hours how I have always paid my cards on time, I don't want to do it.

Main Card: Amex Platinum
For gas: Penfed Platinum Cash Rewards
For travel & dining: Chase Sapphire Preferred

What about trying for a 'lower' tier card? Perhaps the requirements would be less and thus easier to attain?

Lower tier cards don't give 5% cash back on gas though. Unless there are ones I don't know about.

Yea but the categories overlap with Chase Freedom. And you can only redeem cash back after you get 5,000 points.

I realize lower cards don't give cash back which is regrettable but given your current situation, maybe the only way to get a card is to pick up the said lower card, use it for a while to build credit THEN reapply for the cash back cards.

AGP,

If you would like I could put you in touch for my banker who could review your application at PenFed. I maintain a good number of CD's with PenFed and have the card.

I will call PenFed today. If nothing else, I will ask to give back the $5 I paid. When you're calling these people, should you be douchey, or nice and apologetic?

As nice as you can be. Explain that you're a DA Civilian employee, and are stable in your position. Offer to provide documentation regarding income and the stability of said income. Most likely they'll just say don't worry about it and approve you over the phone.

You may have set off the automatic triggers by joining and immediatly applying for the card.

Just called them to see what's up. They said I did not put an annual income, so the system put "$1" by default, and therefore was unable to get me approved... I sent them my last paystub and is now waiting to hear back.
