Citi/Discover credit line increases?

Postby andy1088 » Mon Apr 16, 2012 9:21 am

I got a Citi card at the end of November as well as a Discover more card. When should I inquire about credit line increases? Both cards have balances (Discover about $400 and Citi about $250) I pay about 80% off of both each month (currently 0% apr for both) and would like to increase my credit lines. I have had nothing but great service from Discover just not sure how soon is too soon. I'm gonna guess and say sometime at the end of May I should call (6 months)? Thanks! :)
My cards
Chase-Sapphire-$5,000 Freedom-$3,000, Amazon rewards-$700, Slate-$600
Citi- Diamond Preferred-$4,000, Thank you-$2,500
Discover IT-$2,500
Bank of America cash rewards-$2,000
Capital one newcomer rewards-$500

I got 2 Citi cards back in 2010, and I waited 6 months before I attempted to increase them. Citi gave me an option of a slightly lower increase amount without a hard pull. So I took it
Credit Cards
American Express: Fidelity Rewards (2% cash back) 9.5k
Zync NPSL
Discover: Discover More (5% rotating categories) 12k
Mastercard: Chase Freedom (5% rotating categories) 4.6k
Visa: Citi Forward (5x pts on restaurants) 15.7k
Citi Dividend (5% rotating categories) 5.6
Capital One Journey (1.25% cash back) 1.25k
BofA AAA (5% on gas) 2.5k
PenFed Platinum Rewards (5% on gas 3% groceries) 7.5k

Future Cards
US Bank Cash +
Chase Ink

Citi is very generous when it comes to taking risks with CLs. That said, do you have student cards or regular cards? Either way, I wouldn't ask for a credit line increase til you have paid off your balances in full. If you carry a balance currently, more credit is just more temptation.
Cards in my wallet:
-Citi Forward Card for College Students-July 2011
-American Express Platinum Delta Skymiles--July 2013

I only carry a balance currently due to 18 months 0% apr. It's only like $220.. I haven't used my card too much. It's not a student card it's a platinum select.

Discover is very "conservative" on credit lines. If it has been six months since your last CLI feel free to call them up.
