Credit cards for 700 score?

Postby Donmega884 » Sun Apr 01, 2012 9:33 pm

I'm looking to get into some better credit cards. I have the Cap One Platinum and I'm looking to move up.

I get offers in the mail all the time for Citi and Amex cards. I need to know if I should apply to them or just patiently wait for my 700 credit score to get higher?

I have around the same score as you and got approved for both a Chase Freedom and Discover More card. I'd say get the freedom because Chase is a prime bank, rewards are great (1% on everything 5% quarterly bonuses), sign up bonus is amazing ($200 for spending $500 in first 3 months), Visa is accepted practically everywhere and they give bonuses if you bank with them already. The Discover card had a bonus when I signed up ($100 back for $750 first 3 months) and also gave me 11 months 0% interest. I've heard Chase is quick with credit line increases as well as giving 0% interest for 6 months. Either card is great and will be much better than Cap1 in terms of customer service and rewards. Just my 2 cents and as always YMMV.
My cards
Chase-Sapphire-$5,000 Freedom-$3,000, Amazon rewards-$700, Slate-$600
Citi- Diamond Preferred-$4,000, Thank you-$2,500
Discover IT-$2,500
Bank of America cash rewards-$2,000
Capital one newcomer rewards-$500

AMEX blue cash, preferred or everyday, are good. 6% or 3% on groceries, 3% or 2% on gas and department stores. Good cash back on everyday expenses for most people.
Amex Centurion, Amex Platinum, Amex BCP 8k->24k (5/23/12), Amex TE 15k, Cap One 1.5% 15k->20k (8/7/13), CSP 25k, Chase Palladium 100k, Citibank AA 35k (AU), Firestone 1.8k->2.2k->2.4k (8/20/12), JFCU Jloc 30k, PenFed Plat Rewards 30k, SF Fire 30k, US Bank Cash+ 25k

I have Capital One for over a year now and never missed a payment and my CL is still 500. I need to get my credit limits up because it is affecting my scores.

what do you use your capitol1 card for? do you like to shop at clothing and department stores, or do you use your card for going out to eat at restaurants, gas stations, groceries and drug stores?

I would suggest what crashem said. also the Discover open road gives 2% back on restaurants and gas stations. with this card you get no rotating categories, for this quarter you wouldn't get the 5% back on restaurants because you would have a different level card.

If you had the Discover more card since you don't shop they wouldn't be sending you any coupons.

For your situation I would suggest starting off with the Blue cash preferred card. you get 6% back on groceries, 3% back on gas and either 3 or 2% on department stores.

If after the first year is over and you don't want to pay the 75.00 annual fee, you can then lower your level to Blue Cash everyday where you get 3% back at grocery stores and 2% back on gas and department stores. That version has no fee.

You might want to look at the Bank of America cards. They give out 3 categories; groceries, gas and I'm not sure what the third one is.

So there are 3 suggestions. What crashem had to say the Blue Cash card, the Discover Open Road and Bank of America.
