From the UK and trying to build credit history in the US

Postby mattb » Tue Mar 06, 2012 12:33 pm

Hi all,

I arrived in the States (from the UK) at the beginning of Feb 2012. I have a Wells Fargo checking account and opened a secured credit card with them.

My question is, would it be foolish to try and open a Capital One Newcomer credit card to further build my credit score? Or would this be considered too early?

The Wells Fargo credit card has a limit of $500 and it's driving me crazy having to log in every day to pay off what I've spent to keep it around/under the 30% mark.

Many thanks,
Matt

Do you have residency in the US or valid US SSN? It is required for US cards.

It is never foolish, i will wait at least six months to show some history and apply to increase your chances of approval.

Great, thanks for the reply ooxs.

Yes, I have residency and a SSN. I'll do as you say and wait for six months, then apply.

Use your secure card and pay 98% of your balance each month, leaving a small portion for credit reporting purpose and share the good news with us in six.
