Charges on closed credit card account ruined my FICO score

Around two years ago I paid off and canceled a credit card due too it's raising interest rates, I check my credit report around six months ago I noticed that my credit score went from the low 800s to the low 600s due to this credit card company.

Apparently they allowed to charges (to post to my closed account) and informed me it was my fault due to the fact I did not open their mail which I believe was solicitation for a new credit card. I can't believe that I have no legal recourse in this manner as they keep on insisting, please help with any advice thank you

I had something similar happen to me recently and I am still dealing with it (Bank America Worldpoints card). I did not have the card canceled, but was not using it anymore and a reoccurring annual magazine charge ($60) was charged and sat on my account for about 9 months. I had moved and did not update my address info for that card.

I ended up paying off the amount with no promise of any changes to the situation. But after paying, they were willing to work with me and attempt to remove this from the credit bureau. I am still waiting for the results but I think you should try working with the card company.

Get one of the direct phone numbers of your bank's analysts (which can be found on the forum) to talk to someone who will help you. I am very impressed with the service I am receiving so far.

I really want to thank you for your reply, and actually the first representative I talked to research my problem for around three weeks and came to the conclusion that it was a mistake on their part and my credit score and report could be revised back to its original state.

My real problems started when I called back to check in with her she had been moved from that department and every representative I have talked to since then has researched my problem for no more than 5 min. and have all told me the same thing there is nothing they can do. I guess I'll have to just keep trying but I really appreciate your response. Thank you.

My credit card company did not close my credit card account when I asked them to and months later an yearly renewal charge went through on the credit card and then I received notification of the amount due.

When I called in to inquire, they acknowledged I had requested the account to be closed, but the request was never processed. They furthermore said that the charge is valid as I should have contacted the merchant and cancelled the renewal. :confused:

I understand that I should cancel the renewal charge with the merchant, however this being a yearly renewal, it didn't occur to me to call and cancel. Had the account been closed as requested the merchant would have called me and I would've cancelled services with them since I no longer use the services they offer (computer virus protection).

I want the credit card company to zero out my account since this charge should've never gone through since I requested this account to be closed 5-6 months prior to this charge.

What do you think, should the credit card company be held responsible?
