If you could only have one card...

Postby whowong » Sat Jan 21, 2012 1:01 pm

I know many members on this forum have multiple cards to maximize each category. But I was curious, what if you could only have one card. Which would you choose? For me I would probably stick with my Fidelity Amex.

If only one, I would choose Chase Freedom over Fidelity Amex ONLY because it's a Visa and more widely accepted. Because I'm a Chase checking customer I can see the Freedom account on the same web page as my checking. Also, because I have the checking account, Freedom cashback for me works out to at least 2% on purchases that are $10 or less. That's a good percentage of my transactions. Otherwise it would be the Fidelity Amex.
American Express: Blue Cash Preferred (groceries, 6%; gas, department store, 3%); Gold Delta SkyMiles (Delta Air Lines, 2 miles/dollar, free checked bag).
US Bank: Cash+ (utilities, phone, internet, restaurant, 5%; drugstores, 2%).
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (everything, 2%); Fidelity Visa (everything, 1.5%).
Chase: Freedom (rotating, 5%); Amazon (Amazon.com, 3%); PriorityClub (IHG hotels, 5 points/dollar); Sapphire (not in use).

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.

I would have VISA from any bank or lender because I think VISA is widely accepted everywhere than Mastercard, AMEX, Discover, etc.

Discover and Amex are both out IMO. They are not accepted everywhere I shop. I would have to say I would likely go with my Capital One Venture. Visa Signature Perks, no foreign transaction fees, 2 points per dollar spent. Easy to redeem points, because you do not have to wait until statement day to earn them. If you do any type of traveling (or plan on it) the card is a winner. (I know someone will complain about customer service at Capital One but so far I have not had to deal with them.)

Amex Platinum Personal charge.

Everything I purchase is covered with an additional warranty for free. And I won't even go into all the travel benefits.

Just my two cents.

tough decision, even though my Discover isn't as widely accepted as my capitol venture, my Discover does have my membership date of 1998, while my capitol1 is only 1 year plus. I guess it's hard to beat a longevity.

It would have been my Penfed Platinum cash rewards, but then they changed the cash back on all purchases to .25% beginning next month. I would say my Discover Miles card, but it isn't accepted anywhere. My answer would have to be my credit union Visa because of 1% on all purchases after I hit a threshold, very low 9.5% interest rate, and the sizable limit they gave me.
